Description

The Cicillo Matarazzo Pavilion measures 250 x 50 meters and has three floors plus a basement with a small auditorium . It is a sober volume, which differs slightly from the others, integrating the use of vertical aluminum shutters in its main facade, facing northwest .

History

Since the 4th edition in 1957 , the São Paulo Biennial has been held at the Ciccilio Matarazzo Pavilion located in the Parque do Ibirapuera . It was designed by a team of architects led by Oscar Niemeyer and Helio Uchoa .

It is named after the founder of the Biennial: Francisco Ciccillo Matarazzo Sobrinho (1898-1977). The three-story building provides an exhibition area of around 30,000 m².

This project is characterized and reveals its formal and spatial quality through its interior rooms, in a recurring harmonic contrast already experienced by Oscar Niemeyer in previous projects. In this pavilion, Niemeyer emphasizes the curves of internal mezzanines and sinuous tracks that appear, first through the building’s exterior sobriety, and second, through the rigidity of its orthogonal mesh structure .

The open plan is masterfully employed by the Brazilian architect.
