Chemical computer: tool for complex calculations

The chemical computer is what is called the computer used by chemical professionals for computational chemistry, assisting in highly complex calculations, in addition to storing research information.

Some chemical calculations have great difficulty to be done conventionally, as is the case with quantum mechanics. In this case, it can be useful for testing products and new synthesized molecules, even if they are not yet ready. This helps to avoid expenses that are useless. A computer programmed to perform accurate analyzes, which are usually expensive and time-consuming, avoids not only expenses, but also waste of time.

This computer was built based on a sequence of oscillating chemical reactions that are called Belousov-Zhabotinsky Reactions (Also called BZ reactions). These reactions are oxy-reduction and were discovered by Boris Pavlovich Belousov, a Russian biochemist, in the year 1950, but perfected 11 years later by Anatol Zhabotinsky, a student at the University of Moscow.

Chemistry

Chemistry has a daily growth in divisions, with approximately 1 million inorganic compounds and more than 16 million organic compounds today. That number will still continue to grow, as chemists are always working on the isolation of new compounds, and it will become increasingly difficult to store data on conventional computers.

From this idea that the chemists that form a team of scientists at West England University, located in Bristol, led by Adamatzky Andrew, began to develop research that made it possible to build this chemical computer, which is capable of not only storing as much possible knowledge around chemistry, but also to store knowledge, which facilitates the access of chemists and researchers to knowledge worldwide.

Although not a completely new idea, it was now that this team discovered that chemical computers can solve problems in computational geometry.

It is a collection of small chemical bags called vesicles, which can produce and combine waves emitted by Reaction BZ – as explained above -.

Story

Chemical reactions were originally seen as a simple movement that sought a stable equilibrium, and this was not very promising for computing. But that changed after the discovery of Boris Pavlovich Belousov, as mentioned earlier. The chemical reaction that this scientist created revolved around different and different salts and acids, which were able to vary their colors between yellow and transparent, according to the concentration of the components.

This was considered impossible, but modern theoretical analysis has now shown that complicated reactions can encompass wave phenomena without breaking the laws of nature
