Charles Hoffman is credited as the “father of XBRL “. Charles, a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), brought the idea of what would become XBRL to the AICPA. Charles is the author of the books “Fundamentals of XBRL”, a non-technical guide to XBRL and “Using Financial InformationXBRL: IFRS and US GAAP”, a comprehensive guide to the use of XBRL in financial reporting.
He was a co-editor of the first XBRL taxonomy. He played a major role in creating the taxonomy for financial reporting under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).Charles is co-author of the “Financial Reporting Taxonomy Architecture” (FRTA) 1.0 specification, of the “Financial Reporting Standards Instance” and a major contributor to the XBRL 2.1 specification.Charles is also co-editor of the US GAAP Taxonomy Architecture and part of the team expressing accounting principlesgenerally accepted in the US with XBRL for the financial information of public companies that is being financed by the US SEC.

Prior to his involvement with XBRL, Charles served as an auditor for Price Waterhouse , as a financier , for a number of companies, and as an application software consultant. In 1997, he was awarded the AICPA Innovative Technology User Award. He was named by Accounting Technology as one of the hundred most influential people in the accounting profession.
