Central Park is an urban park located in Manhattan , a forest in the heart of  New York City, between 5th and 8th Avenues and 59th and 110th streets.

It is  free to enter  and the doors are open from 6 AM to 1 AM.

Central Park is shaped like a rectangle (about 4000 x 800 m.), Being  larger than countries such as Monaco or the Vatican City and is the most visited park in the United States , with an average of 25 million people a year.

Designed by  Frederick Law Oldsted and Calvert Vaux in the mid-19th century , despite its natural appearance it has several artificial lakes, two ice skating rinks and numerous meadows and leisure or sports areas.

It also has real forests . Some areas have very lush trees and the park is considered the main lung of Manhattan .

Gardens, lagoons and the Zoo.

Despite being in the heart of the largest metropolis in the world, Central Park has its own fauna and flora . With its 341 hectares of grass, Central Park represents the largest and greenest space in Manhattan. In the park there are a large number of American elms and another 250,000 trees scattered among the many valleys.

The large lawns also have several gardens . The valley ‘s largest lawn park is  Great Lawn ( large lawn ), up to the  Metropolitan Museum of Art and the  American Museum of Natural History . To the southeast of the park is  the Central Park Zoo and to the north the  Conservatory Garden, one of the most important and visited botanical gardens in the world.

The Zoo  attracts almost a million visitors from all over the world and is divided into three different zones that emulate the habitat of each animal as well as possible:  tropical , with an environment full of trees;  temperate , with animals like lions and monkeys; and  polar , where you can see polar bears swimming underwater through a transparent wall.

Another almost obligatory visit is the  Guggenheim Museum in New York,  where we can see masterpieces by Kandinsky , Picasso , Monet or Van Gogh  inside the highly praised  Frank Lloyd Wright building .

Monuments

Central Park also has many interesting monuments such as Belvedere Castle, an authentic Victorian style castle designed in 1865 and current headquarters of  the New York meteorological observatory , The Bethesda Fountain , or the Strawberry Fields , erected in honor of  John Lennon , assassinated in in front of the nearby Dakota Building .

Central Park has  more than 30 statues , many of them on the  Literary Walk. Most are of poets and writers with  Shakespeare  in a prime location.

At the height of East 74th Street, there is the  statue of Alice in Wonderland ,  Alice in Wonderland .. All north of the  Conservatory Water , a shallow pond where New Yorkers go to play with their boats. scale. The sculptural set is specially designed for children to climb.

The obelisk of Central Park, the oldest sculpture in the park, is also very visited . It is also known as “Cleopatra’s Needle” and is located behind the Met . It is an  authentic Egyptian obelisk  commissioned by Tuthmosis III around 1500 BC, which was donated to the city of New York by the Government of Egypt, to help build the Suez Canal.

Activities in Central Park.

In  Central Park there are all kinds of sports:  Park Drive , about 10 kilometers long, is common for runners, cyclists, and skaters. In fact, the  New York City Marathon ends in Central Park.

A fun option is to go to Trump Rink , the most famous ice skating rink in Central Park, which opens from October to April, with a special number of people at Christmas. At the northern end of the park there is another track, the Lasker Rink , which in summer turns into a swimming pool.

Other entertainments include the theater ( Shakespeare in the Park , performed since 1962), concerts (the New York Philharmonic Orchestra gives an open-air concert each summer on the  Great Lawn ) and the  Opera (two operas a year), in addition to numerous popular music performers who have played throughout the years in the park.

Throughout the park there are also a large number of  cartoonists , puppets and the famous  Central Park merry-go-round that has not stopped turning since 1870.

Or of course there are many cafes and restaurants, many of them with an outdoor terrace to make a stop on the excursion and recharge. Excellent coffees, fast food or a good more elaborate menu. There is everything in New York gastronomically speaking . And we mean food from all over the world…!

Or it is also highly recommended to have a picnic in meadows like  Sheep Meadow. Lying in the sun, thousands of New Yorkers go to this’ sheep meadow.

The park has its own  Police Department , which greatly reduced the number of crimes. Although it is true that it is not recommended for tourists to go at night through  Central Park.
