What Is Canker Sores

Canker sores are small sores or painful ulcers that appear on the oral mucosa. They usually appear on the inside of the cheeks, on the lips or on the tongue. They are usually shallow and rounded in a red or whitish color, causing pain or discomfort when eating, drinking and talking.

It is not always possible to associate a cause for its development, however, there are a number of factors that can condition the appearance of small wounds:

  • Injuries
  • Vigorous brushing of teeth
  • Dental problems and poor oral hygiene
  • Hormonal changes
  • Stress
  • Allergies to certain medications
  • Consumption of acidic or very hard foods

  • Ache
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Discomfort from eating or drinking

In more severe cases:

  • Fever
  • Inflammation of the neck nodes
  • General feeling of malaise

Treatment consists of relieving pain until the wounds heal spontaneously, and may include:

  • Antiseptic and antibacterial solutions
  • Painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs for local application
  • Oral mucosa protective gel
