Old Washington Hall, New York City, was the meeting-place of a coterie of literary men, among whom were Cooper, Bryant, Verplanck, Sands, Halleck, and others, known as the Bread-and-Cheese Club, because, in their voting for membership, bread was used for the affirmative, and cheese for the negative ballots.
