Boricated alcohol

Boricated alcohol. It is a compound based on alcohol and boric acid , in veterinary medicine it is used for cures and prevention of ear conditions. You can do a good cleaning of the animal’s ear and then place in each ear two or three drops of boric alcohol, which will help prevent the ear from becoming infected and causing otitis, which is very bothersome for dogs, especially For those with droopy ears, these dogs are the ones that need the most attention in their ears because their ears do not “breathe” and can become infected.

How to make boric alcohol

This is perfect for this season where all the boys go to the pools and are susceptible to infections, with a few drops of this, we prevent anything. Well, for this we must use 70º alcohol and a few drops of vinegar. The ratio is 8 drops of vinegar for every 10 cc of alcohol. (cc = ml) You can use apple cider vinegar so that it does not smell as much as that of wine. It is just as effective because what interests us is the acetic acid in vinegar. If we want to make 70º alcohol it is not difficult either, we have 96% alcohol by volume, that is, 96 ml of alcohol for every 100 of dissolution. Then, as a rule of three, 40.85 cc (cc = ml) of distilled water should be added to 100 cc of 96 ° alcohol. To do all this we must add 112 drops of vinegar, that is, to make the 100 cc of alcohol + the 40.85 cc of water.

How to use it

Experience: As so often happens, I learned about the existence of boric alcohol due to necessity. I was on a diving trip in the Red Sea, embarked on one of those diving cruises on board, which means, without touching land for the duration of the trip, when after almost ten dives I was bothered by a ear. It was my third day on the trip and there were still a handful ahead, and the prospect of otitis for the rest of the cruise had me worried. Fortunately, one of the traveling companionsHe was a good friend who is also a doctor. I consulted him and then he spoke those two words that I have no longer forgotten: boric alcohol. He explained to me that the plankton in the tropical seas has the ugly habit of entering the external ear of the divers and can sometimes irritate the mucosa producing an external otitis, annoying and painful, and that can incapacitate for diving. The solution to the problem is twofold: always dive with a hood, despite the temptation not to wear it in tropical water with a pleasant temperature, and put two or three drops of boric acid saturated (5%) on each ear after each dive . That kills the microorganisms that have tried to nest in our ears after diving. My friend told me that he always traveled with his bottled alcohol bottle, and thus avoided annoying external otitis. Luckily I had a reserve bottle and that was my salvation. Since then, it is one of the first medicines that enters my toiletry when I prepare a diving trip.
