Obtaining

The procedure consists of heating barium sulfate with coal tar to a temperature between 350 and 450 ºC, and in a second step, calcination at a temperature of 700 to 950 ºC. Finally the resulting mixture is reacted with an alkaline carbonate.

Applications

Barium carbonate is used as an additive in glass manufacturing to improve its qualities, in ceramic products, in the manufacture of permanent magnets and to react with titanium dioxide to produce barium titanate in the manufacture of ceramics with high dielectric properties. .

It is also used for the preparation of rat poison, previously for sugar refining , it is also used to control the chromate / sulfate ratio in chromium electrolytic baths .

Health risks

Symptoms in case of ingestion: Irritations in mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, esophagus and intestinal tract. It can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, salivary flow, intestinal disorders, diarrhea , headaches and stomach pains.

By acute exposure it causes: Arrhythmias, cardiovascular disorders, circulation disorders, collapse and muscular disorders.

Irritating skin .

Irritating eyes .

Recommendations and first aid

1) Inhalation: breathe fresh air, rest, if necessary artificial respiration and immediate medical attention.

2) Ingestion: if the person is conscious give water , sodium sulfate , alum to drink , call a doctor immediately.

3) Skin contact: remove contaminated clothing and wash with plenty of water, seek medical assistance.

4) Eye contact: wash carefully, do not put any substance without indication of the doctor, ask for medical assistance.

Use in Homeopathy
