Analysis Ys IX: Monstrum Nox

Adol Christin’s latest fun adventure comes to Nintendo Switch with a conversion full of graphic clipping and performance issues.

Shopping based on what conversions of games for Nintendo Switch is becoming little less than a risk sport. Yes, it is a hybrid console with considerably less powerful hardware than the rest of the platforms on the market, so we take it for granted that some sacrifices must be made to bring certain titles to the machine, but that is when the expertise of studies when optimizing the experience and offering us a good version. Unfortunately, in recent years we have seen a good handful of adaptations that have not measured up and that have not been taken care of the least, something that is very evident if we compare it with such surprising works as the ports of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt , Doom Eternal orTony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 , not to mention exclusives like Luigi’s Mansion 3 or Monster Hunter Rise .

Due to this, we have reached a situation in which it is convenient to look closely at the multiplatform games that we want to buy on Switch in order to avoid getting an unpleasant surprise in the event that the conversion is not up to the mark. Therefore, today we have to talk to you about the edition of Ys IX: Monstrum Nox for the Nintendo hybrid, a version that arrives a few months after its original release for PS4.

The blur of Balduq

As we always tell you in these cases, the first thing we want to do is invite you to read the analysis we dedicated to it when it was launched on the Sony console, since it will be there where you can delve into the pros and cons of this adventure. The game as such is exactly the same (which also implies that it is still not translated into Spanish) and there are no changes of any kind in its content, gameplay or story, so here we are going to focus mainly on the conversion work that is Has made.

This installment has a darker touch than usual in the saga and its history is full of interesting mysteries.

As a quick summary, to say that we are facing an excellent role-playing adventure in real time in which we will have to explore a big city while we level up, obtain new powers, recruit new characters and fight against all kinds of beasts in the numerous dungeons that await us on our journey.

If it is characterized by something, it is by having an agile, frantic and fun combat system like few others , although exploration has also been greatly enhanced in this installment thanks to the inclusion of a series of powers that improve our mobility and allow us to do things like running up walls or gliding long distances. Obviously, this also translated into more vertical scenarios and wildly satisfying scrolling mechanics that are also useful in battle.

The fighting is very agile and frantic.

Add to all this that we have told you a spectacular and very powerful soundtrack, a good story, charismatic characters and a large amount of content to keep us entertained for hours and hours, and you will easily understand why we liked it so much despite its obvious graphic limitations and some other minor defect.

The fact that it is such a discreet title at a visual level could lead us to think that the conversion to Switch should not have been a great effort, although if we take into account that on PS4 it is not particularly well optimized and suffers from performance problems (not like that on PS5, where it can be enjoyed at 4K and almost constant 60fps thanks to a patch), the fear of encountering a technical disaster takes on a lot of force.

The game suffers especially in the open areas of the map and when playing in handheld mode.

The first thing that catches the eye is the low resolution that it boasts both on desktop and laptop , which translates into a very blurry image that even prevents us from appreciating certain graphic details, although the cuts also extend to textures and effects, turning some elements into little more than fuzzy spots when we play on the console screen.

Unfortunately, this does not stop there, as the problems are aggravated in the more open areas , where the pop-in is extremely exaggerated and everything loads abruptly before our noses, which has even made it difficult for us to find certain chests and characters. not being able to see them until they are practically next to you. And considering that we are going to spend a lot of time in these types of areas, it is not a precisely minor defect.

The charges are not particularly long.

Regarding its performance, the objective here has been set at 30 fps instead of 60, although these are only moderately stable in dungeons , since in Balduq and in open places the lows are quite pronounced, somewhat that we can also extend to certain battles against certain bosses, where the rate of images per second becomes a new rival that we have to deal with, something that is greatly aggravated when playing on a laptop. It is not that it becomes unplayable, but it does have a negative impact on a game characterized by the frenzy and dynamism of its confrontations.

Conclusions

As you can see, the version for Switch of Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is far from ideal to enjoy this fantastic adventure . Despite this, it is such a good and fun ARPG that it manages to make us have a good time even with all these flaws, which speaks very well of Falcom’s work. Therefore, if the Nintendo hybrid is your only platform, you value portability above all else and you consider that everything we have mentioned is not going to affect your enjoyment too much, then you will find here a purchase option that is worth it. consider.
