Analysis Total War

One of the classics of strategy returns with a remarkable remastering that takes care from graphics to game mechanics to re-enjoy one of the best Total War.

Total War is one of the most important strategy sagas of all time . Delivery to delivery this license created by Creative Assembly and distributed throughout its history by EA, Activision and SEGA has been conquering the players of the genre by innovating, improving and growing by leaps and bounds to earn a place among the greats like Age of Empires or Starcraft .

Precisely last year was the 20th anniversary of the saga and to celebrate it Creative Assembly and SEGA will launch this Total War: Rome Remastered on April 29 , the return of what is probably one of the most beloved games of a franchise that already has with 15 different deliveries behind them that has not stopped growing in each one of them and that, with this return to the classic, they are not satisfied with giving a little facelift but include a few improvements to adapt it to the times. so that veterans and novices can be captivated by this title set in the Roman Empire at the beginning of 270 BC

A great facelift on a technical level with a new interface

As it is a remastering, we are going to start by talking about the first thing that stands out at the level of changes, which, obviously, is the new graphic finish that significantly improves what we had seen in the original title that has almost 17 years behind it. Thanks to this we have new textures adapted to 4K resolution, new environments in battlefields with higher definition, new models of all units, a much more vivid and attractive color palette , improvements in the camera and compatibility with screens ultra-panoramic. Obviously, they are not “top of the range” graphics since we remember that we are facing a remastering, not aremake , and that Total War: Rome has almost two decades behind it, but the changes and graphical improvements suit it wonderfully and make it very enjoyable on a visual level.

Of all the tweaks at a technical level, the one that stands out the most for us is the interface , much closer to the one used in modern installments of the saga that makes our life much easier both in the management part in which We control the cities or we move our army around the map as when fighting on the battlefield, being able to see everything much more clearly and attractively before our eyes.

The new interface is one of the most notable changes allowing us to have more information on the screen in a simpler and more accessible way.

Regarding the performance with our computer with a GeForce RTX 3080 , i7 7700K processor, 16GB of RAM, SSD storage and Windows 10 we have not had a single failure or noticeable performance drop, being able to run it at 300 fps at 1440p resolution without any of problem beyond some typical errors of game animations of the time. The only but that we put in this sense is that the loading times were sometimes somewhat long .

Retouching and adjustments to improve the original without breaking it

Creative Assembly not only bets on washing the face of its game at a graphic level, but in the playable we also find additions, changes and improvements to adapt the experience to the times without breaking the original game, in fact they even give us the possibility of choose the rules with which we want to play, being able to alternate between the classic ones and the remastered ones, being able to even choose which rules we want for the different sections such as AI, commerce …

The changes , at least for the one who writes you, are for the better , with very interesting additions such as a new special unit called Merchant that will allow us to trade and weave alliances with distant factions, being an “agent” on horseback between the spy and the diplomat. that since we bring it to the scene we also want to say that there are a few adjustments in diplomacy that, for example, now allow us to make compensations to other nations to compensate for conflicts in the past that will also mark the relations between the factions in a much more evident way.

At the beginning of the game we can choose if we want to play with the rules of the original or the remastering and even choose if we want to apply one or the other in different sections.

The AI has also received a good handful of improvements in every way, from diplomacy to the behavior of the different factions in both the field and in the tactical battlefield. In fact, in the campaign it may be necessary to make an adjustment at certain times with the main factions that, despite having a more favorable starting point a priori, we can have a worse time with them during the first bars of the game than with others that are a priori weaker because the AI is very aggressive against our attacks . In addition, if we choose a faction outside of Rome, we will see how all the Roman families join forces if we decide to attack the capital of the Empire, coordinating much better at a tactical level.

In the battlefield as such, the improvement that draws the most attention is related to the technical section and it is the camera itself that allows us to see more easily everything that happens during the bloody confrontation between our units and the enemies thanks to a camera A tactic similar to that which we have seen for some time in the Total War saga , which allows us to see at a glance a “board” with all the units and better select our next movements.

On the battlefield, the best addition is the tactical camera that has been around for some time in the saga and that allows us to better plan our next move.

With more content than ever

If the graphics and playable settings seem little to you (we have only listed the most prominent ones) there is also more content available in Total War: Rome Remastered which includes the Barbarian Invasion and Alexander expansions and which also has more content starting with a redesigned tutorial to familiarize ourselves with the remastering, a tutorial that has been made a bit short, by the way.

We can also access 16 new factions that were blocked in the original game allowing us to control a total of 38 different factions with which to conquer part of the world. The game wiki with a greater description of the units is also improved , cross-play between Windows, Mac and Linux players is enabled and if we buy Total War: Rome Remastered on Windows we will also be able to access Rome: Total War Collection completely free of charge. , the original game collection.

‘Total War: Rome Remastered’ is much more than a graphic facelift and almost everything it adds and proposes it does so rightly.

A remastering that is worth it

During the last few years we have come across remasters of all kinds, some well carried out, others with little effort and others that broke their promises. Of all of them, Total War: Rome Remastered is of the first type, a remastering that is worth it and that does not settle for a facelift, updating it in graphics and playable mechanics thinking so much about the players who fell in love with it. original as those new fans of the saga who could not enjoy one of its most special installments.

Everything is done with care and most of what this remastering proposes we love and it has kept us glued to the screen to forge the Roman Empire as we wanted or to teach them a lesson with the Hispanics with whom we not only did not allow ourselves to be conquered, rather, we did our own reconquest and expansion to fulfill what the Nikkis sang a few years ago.
