Importance of the city

The occupation of Aké began from the Late Preclassic (300 BC-300 AD) and continued until the Postclassic (1300-1450 AD). Aké reached a high urban level from a very early time and maintained relationships with places such as Izamal, to which it was joined by a 32 km long sacbé and its influence reached the Río Bec region in Campeche and Cobá in Quintana Roo. Aké consists of two sectors delimited by concentric walls. The interior limits the ceremonial area, while the exterior circumscribes the residential area of the site. In the central part of the site is Structure 1 or De Las Pilastras, so named because in the upper part it has a large hypostyle room that surely held one of the largest roofs of its time.

Aké’s influence reached the Río Bec region in the current state of Campeche and Cobá , in the state of Quintana Roo .

Aké is one of the most important in northern Yucatán and is now known as Ruinas de Aké after the San Lorenzo Aké hacienda that stands on ancient Mayan remains. It was a Mayan city that served as a link to the governors of that time to make agreements and hold assemblies that governed the destinies of that civilization, a place that is characterized by its sacbés , its architecture of large blocks of semi-glazed stone, known as megalithic, its late occupation with buildings of the PSUC style , its great limestone millstones and its sacred precincts.

In this archaeological zone there are beautiful buildings, whose bases, pyramids and stairways give us an idea of its splendor and majesty. The place has several cenotes and two aguadas that in the past functioned as water suppliers.
