ADDITION ALGORITHM

today we are going to talk about the addition algorithm.

The content is very simple, but many people get confused at the time of the test due to the excessive use of calculators on a daily basis.

Good study!

ADDITION

Addition is the most basic of mathematical operations. It is linked to the idea of joining or adding.

Example:

Pedrinho had 5 reais and won 2 more from his mother. Of course, Pedrinho got 7 reais.

The symbol used to represent the addition is the (+) . Look:

5 + 2 = 7

In this example, we say that 5 and 2 are plots and 7 is the sum.

PLOT + PLOT = SUM

THE ALGORITHM

The structure of the sum algorithm is as follows:

To use the algorithm, the plots must be positioned from right to left, so that we add the units first, then the tens, hundreds, etc.

Comments

  • The order of the plots does not change the sum, that is, it does not matter the position of each of the plots in the algorithm;
  • The algorithm can be used to add as many plots as needed, not just two.

Example 1. Add 231 and 465.

Units: 1 + 5 = 6

Dozens: 3 + 6 = 9

Hundreds: 2 + 4 = 6

Example 2. Adding 142 and 3046

Units: 2 + 6 = 8

Dozens: 4 + 4 = 8

Hundreds: 1 + 0 = 1

Thousands: 0 + 3

Example 3. Add 234 and 148

We now have a special case. When we add the units (4 + 8 = 12), we get a 2-digit number. In this case, the figure 2 will also be the sum figure, while 1, which represents a ten, will be placed on the tens column (the famous “goes one”).

Units: 4 + 8 = 12 (we consider only 2)

Dozens: 1 + 3 + 4 = 8

Hundreds: 2 + 1 = 3
