Origin

Acrylic fabric is an artificial fiber made from acrylonitrile, from which it derives its generic name. Acrylonitrile was first obtained in Germany in 1893 .

It was one of the chemicals used by Carothers and his team in fundamental research on high polymers that was conducted at the Du Pont company. The same ones that developed an acrylic fiber in 1944 and started commercial production of them in 1950 . It was given the commercial name of Orlón

Applications

These fibers are the most similar to wool and have been widely used in the manufacture of fabrics for baby clothes, as they are softer, they are easier to care for and they are appropriate for allergy sufferers.

features

Acrylic fabrics can be ironed and dry cleaned, they are resistant to moths, fungi and sunlight, they have sharp colors, they are soft and non-allergic, they are not so durable, but for clothing and domestic uses their resistance is satisfactory.

This material is not as strong and durable as other nylon, polyester and may have a tendency to shrink; It is also sensitive to the use of chlorine bleach.

Fabric features

At the same time, one of the peculiarities of acrylic fabrics is that they are anti-allergic, which makes them not only perfect for the little ones, but also for adults with this type of pathology. Among the advantages of acrylic fabrics, we can say that they can be dry cleaned, as well as ironed in the same way; the only drawback is that it cannot be classified as a resistant fabric, such as nylon or polyester, and it has a great tendency to shrink. Not too many chemicals should be used for maintenance, since acrylic fabrics are often sensitive to them, liquids such as chlorine-based bleach tend to ruin clothes.

Qualities

Fabrics of this type are extremely soft and very light, which makes this fabric perfect for making clothes. Some current garments are made based on acrylic fabrics but combined with natural fibers, to provide greater and better customer comfort; Also, combining acrylic with natural fiber provides better wear resistance.

In its early days, clothing made from acrylic fabric was very prone to pilling, so when it was washed regularly, it got a worn look. In any case, acrylic fabrics should not be exposed to the use of detergents or continuous washing, the more we take care of it, the longer it will last.

Acrylic fabrics are today widely used in the manufacture of various types and classes of clothing, including sportswear; Soccer teams opt for acrylic socks for their traditional uniform. In school clothes, also stockings, sweatshirts and similar garments are made from acrylic fabrics; This is because this fabric maintains its shape, that is, it does not deform with use and is very elastic.

Lumberjacks, explorers and adventurers also choose this type of fabric for their clothes, since when acrylic fabric is mixed with cotton, an almost perfect combination is obtained, favoring comfort as well as softness. For example, those who jog or run several kilometers, always use acrylic fabric stockings because they protect the foot from the formation of blisters.

The acrylic fabric is very resistant to stains and does not generate wrinkles, it is a warm material that maintains the original color. Another advantage of this raw material lies in the price, it is usually very cheap, and therefore it is available to everyone; Anyway, when we buy a garment that results from a combination of acrylic and fiber, the price may rise a little more.
