The articles are words that determine the noun . They always precede it and coincide with it in number and gender . For example: The house is big. (The article “la” determines the noun “house”, which is singular and feminine)

Item types

Depending on whether they are elements that the issuer already knows or not, they are divided into specific or indeterminate. For example: The cat crawled through the window. / A cat crawled through the window. In the first case, the sender knows the cat and refers to a specific cat, while in the second case it refers to an animal that he does not know.

Certain items . They are used when the reader already knows the element because it is not the first time it has been named. The determined items are:

• Una (feminine singular). For example: a song, a girlfriend, an idea.
• Unas (feminine plural). For example: some windows, some friends.

To these articles is added what , which is neutral, in addition to the contractions to (a + el) and  del (de + el).

How do they work within the sentence?

The syntactic role of articles is to be direct modifiers, since they are always attached to a noun and modify it without any intermediary element.

As a modifier of a noun , the articles function as a direct modifier in any syntactic structure in which there may be a noun.

For example:

• An employee summoned us. (“The” is MD of the subject’s core)
• We will give you the floor. (“The” is the nucleus of the direct object)
• Javier, the older brother, took the lead. (“The” is MD of the apposition kernel)
