History

The church in Sagua preserved the custom of burying the dead in its patios and it is there, at the bottom of the patio of the Santísima Trinidad , on the slope that is today the continuation of Martí Street, that we can say that the first cemetery was found. of the region, in the year 1835 .

It is not until 1860 that Don Tomás Cecilio Jardines, son of Doña Manuela Jardines, authorizes the delivery of a plot of land, to which Cubans and Spaniards residing in the municipality contribute about a thousand pesos for the construction of the municipal cemetery, a work in charge of the master mason Francisco Estol and sponsored by the landowner Don Juan Texidó and his daughter Feliciana.

In this way it was inaugurated in 1862 with the name of San Fernando. Already in the 20th century , the population of Sagüero increased and several public works were carried out for the sake of the development that the municipality was acquiring.

In the 1930s, a consensus was reached to expand and rebuild the municipal cemetery, which was approved by the city council, its president being Pascual Gómez Fuentes. This reconstruction has not undergone changes. Due to its sculptural works, it is characterized as one of the patrimonies of the municipality.

When the cemetery was rebuilt in the third decade of the 20th century, a small park was built in front of it. This place is also used for mourning farewells. The park was left for those family members who do not want to go through or the people who stay there when they leave. In addition to this park, a wall or wall was added around its perimeter in order to prevent the entry of animals, it has an entrance and exit.

The streets inside the necropolis were paved, electric light was installed and it was organized by patios, while its registration was enabled, documents that disappeared because there is no record of them. The record that is enabled is from 1980 . A room for a corpse, a bathroom and a locker are also built. Its extension is registered in 240 square meters.

Architecture

This cemetery consists of four patios A, B, C and D. Patio A is made up of the veterans’ pantheon, 184 vaults and 21 niches.

Patio B is made up of 131 vaults and 20 niches and Patio C is made up of the Pantheon of the Fallen for the Defense of the Homeland, the Pantheon of the Fallen of the Rebel Army and the INDER Pantheon for high-performance athletes. Courtyard D has 305 state niches.

These data, offered by the personnel who work in the cemetery, do not take into account the pantheons and private vaults in what only refers to the state tombs.

A peculiarity of this cemetery is to be within the same town and surrounded by houses. As the population of Sagüero grew, the number of buildings around it increased, which is why it gives the impression of having been built inside, however, it was the citizens who approached it.
