Roller roller

Roller roller. Civil engineering machine used to tamp (compact) the soil in the construction of highways, roads, esplanades and other similar uses. In Cuba it is better known by the names of cylinder or steamroller . In other countries it is known as a compactor .

Functioning

They are self-propelled machines whose wheels are cylinders of great weight that during their advance forward or backward they tamp (compact) the ground, to give it solidity to carry out civil engineering works. There are also small manually operated rammers.

Technical characteristics

A typical motor grader has a motor with a power of about 120 to 200 hp and a typical working width of 3.0 m. Normal working speed is slow, in the range of up to 2.0 km / h. The transfer speed does not exceed 10.0 km / h.

Roller Mechanisms

Tractor . The equipment’s energy source is a medium-powered tractor , with all its driving and control mechanisms.

Cylinders . The running-in system is made up of heavy wheels in the form of cylinders. In most models these cylinders can be filled with water to increase the weight of the equipment and contribute to further tamping. The machine generally has a water tank, which through pipes wet the cylinders to reduce asphalt or other materials from sticking to the cylinder surface. You can also have scraper blades for the same purpose.

Front cylinder . The front cylinder, which at the same time is its only front wheel, has a system of rotation in a vertical axis, which allows the machine to move to the right or left, following the direction desired by the operator.

Rear cylinders . The two rear wheels are also shaped like cylinders, and are the ones that serve as driving wheels.

Risks associated with its operation

It is heavy and complex equipment with which various security measures of nearby personnel and the operator must be carefully observed, for example: falling people; knocks or contacts with moving parts of the machine; entrapment; thermal and electrical contacts; hitting, hitting and crashing; dust, noise and vibrations; etc. The operator is only allowed on the equipment when it is in motion.
