Requirements for the qualification of auditors

An auditor must have very specific personal skills. These include integrity, openness and tenacity.

The audits are conducted and completed by one or more auditors with specific skills to exercise the profession of auditor. The ISO defines that the auditor must possess “adequate personal characteristics and the ability to know how to apply the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct an audit”.

In the chapter “Competence and assessment of auditors” ISO 19011 further specifies these characteristics:

  • Personal characteristics (person respectful of ethical principles, open-minded, diplomatic, gifted with a spirit of observation, eclectic, stubborn, capable of making decisions and self-confident).
  • Familiarity with management systems.
  • Specific (technical) knowledge concerning the sector in which to operate Training.
  • Professional experience.
  • Auditor training.
  • Auditing experience.

This ISO standard provides guidelines on various audit-related aspects. It is up to the user to define his own needs regarding his own area.
