Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka . South African politics. First woman to serve as Vice President, the highest rank in South African history . Executive Director of UN Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (UN Women) from the 19 of August of 2013 .

Biographical synthesis

He was born in 1955 . She is married and has three children.

He holds a BA in Education from the University of Lesotho ( 1980 ) and a Master of Philosophy in Educational Policy and Planning from the University of Cape Town ( 2003 ).

In 2003, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the Western Cape , and obtained a Doctorate in education and technology from the University of Warwick , UK .

Trajectory

Between 1984 and 1986 he served as Coordinator of Young Women’s Christian Association and Young Women was the first President of the Women Natal, affiliated with the United Democratic Front , when it was founded in December 1983.

Elected member of parliament in 1994 with the position of Chairperson of the Public Services Committee. He was deputy minister at the Department of Trade and Industry between 1996 and 1999 , Minister of Minerals and Energy from 1999 to 2005 and worked briefly as interim Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology in 2004 .

First woman to serve as Vice President of South Africa from 2005 to 2008 .

He created the Umlambo Foundation in 2008 to support schools in underprivileged areas in South Africa through mentoring and advisory services for teachers and in Malawi through school improvements with local partners.

She took up her post as Executive Director of UN Women on August 19 , 2013 . She brings extensive experience to her new role, including being the first woman to serve as South African Vice President from 2005 to 2008 .
