Almost all living beings perspire in some way, this is a very important process for the survival of many of them, as well as breathing. There are several types of perspiration, they vary according to the structure and needs of the species. Know a little more about this subject now.
Sweating is a process in which the water that is contained in a particular body is eliminated because of the increase in the external or internal temperature that makes this water to flow to the surface of that body. Although any body that contains water in its composition can be subject to perspiration if exposed to high temperatures, it is in living beings that perspiration gains vital importance.
How does it happen in vegetables?
The sweating that occurs in vegetables is a very different process from that in other living beings, especially in man. Usually plant transpiration occurs through stomata, the leaf is in contact with the soil through its vascular system and according to the humidity of the air, water vapor leaves the leaf through the stomata.
When the relative humidity of the air is low and there is wind, perspiration becomes high. Many plants have a cuticle that covers the leaf surface, when the stomata close, if this cuticle is not too thick, perspiration continues to happen through it. If the soil is deficient in water, the stomata close so that there is no more water loss, but as this transpiration can still continue to occur through the cuticle, there is a possibility that the plant will die.
How does it happen in humans and other animals?
In terrestrial beings, both the external and internal heat, which is generated by the vital functions of the living being, end up causing an increase in temperature. When that temperature starts to get higher, it consequently causes perspiration, which is a way that many people can eliminate some of that heat.
The water that is inside the body of living beings, somehow rises to the surface and with it takes the internal heat out of the body. In some mammals, as is the case with humans, sweating occurs in the form of sweat on the skin. This sweat, in addition to eliminating the excess heat that is inside the body, also helps to cool the skin surface when it comes in contact with drafts.
In humans, this sweat is produced by the sweat glands, which in addition to water, also eliminate minerals and other compounds that can be harmful or even unnecessary, which are present in the blood, such as uric acid. When this sweat is excessive we call it hyperhidrosis, which is considered a disease and has treatment.
In other species of animals, such as dogs and some cats, sweating occurs through the tongue and nose of these animals. Whales, like many other aquatic mammals, have a mechanism for regulating sweating that is not as efficient in dry environments, as these animals often end up dying from dehydration or overheating inside their bodies.
Factors that alter sweating
There are some factors that contribute to sweating change and generally increase, they are:
- The ilumination;
- The relative humidity of the air;
- The temperature;
- The water available in the soil (in the case of plants);
- The wind.
