They are the skin of the fruit. It is the place with which the fruit interacts with light, forming a variety of pigments that absorb different wavelengths of light , as is the case with flavonoids and carotenoids, which are very beneficial for health. It consists of two parts: the inner layer called the albedo (the white part) and the outer part called the flavedo. In Botany, it usually refers to the exocarp, however the term exocarp also refers to harder covers in the case of the walnut, which does not have a proper shell, because its protective layer cannot be detached by hand.

Other names

Bark, skin or shell (in Venezuela )

Medicinal use

Aid for digestion

Certain peels, as for example the case of the orange, provide phytonutrients and flavonoids in greater quantities than the pulp of the orange itself. Its shell is especially recommended when it comes to enjoying good digestion, thanks especially to its anti-inflammatory properties. Although it is true that eating oranges can cause heartburn in some people, the opposite occurs with its peel: it helps to alleviate it, in addition to reducing the discomfort caused by flatulence, diarrhea and in general due to poor digestion. As it could not be less, both orange and lemon peel are especially rich in natural antioxidants and vitamin C, ideal for enjoying a good functioning of the immune system.

Help reduce blood sugar

It is an interesting quality that, above all, provides the green tomato peel. In fact, different investigations found that consuming green tomato peel as an infusion was very beneficial in lowering blood sugar levels. We owe this effect to the presence of a compound known as acylsacrose, which has hypoglycemic action. This same quality is presented not only by green tomato peel, but also by fruit peels such as blueberries, plums, apples and pears.

Help decrease fat and gain muscle

A study found that consuming the peel of certain fruits (plums, apples, pears and blueberries), helped to decrease the amount of body fat while allowing you to gain muscle.

Lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels

On the other hand, the peel of fruits such as pears, apples, blueberries and plums help to reduce high levels not only of cholesterol, but also of triglycerides.

Reduce overweight and obesity

Particularly in the case of apple peel, which not only helps reduce fat levels in the blood (as we already knew in the previous paragraph). It is also rich in ursolic acid, which decreases fat mass and increases lean fat. In addition, it helps prevent its most common complications: both prediabetes and fatty liver, by increasing energy expenditure.

Uses at home

Clean the fat

To clean the grease, spray the affected area with salt or baking soda (to act as an abrasive) and then rub with the lemon halves. (Be careful when using lemon on sensitive surfaces, such as marble.)

Leave the coffee maker shiny

Add ice, salt, and lemon peel to an empty coffee pot, spin for about a minute or two, dump, and rinse well.

Clean the kettle

For the deposit of minerals that accumulate in teapots, fill the container with water and a handful of lemon peels and bring it to a boil. Turn off the heat and let it rest for an hour, drain and rinse very well, in this way the kettle will have recovered its life as new and will be totally clean.

Dye fabrics naturally

Pomegranate peels are an effective natural method of creating a dye for fabrics. Use a stainless steel pot large enough to cover the fabric, fill it with hot water and add the shells and let it sit overnight. Process:

  • Simmer the water and shells the next day, then remove the shells and add the damp cloth at the end.
  • Let it cook gently for an hour and then you should let it cool overnight.
  • Remove it the next day and rinse with cold water.

Purify water

Banana peels can be used to purify drinking water contaminated with toxic heavy metals such as copper and lead.

Avoid lump formation

If sugar cubes normally form in your sugar bowl, try adding a little lemon peel (with traces of pulp), to keep it moist and prevent them from forming.

Making citrus extract powder

With the peel of lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits, which are safe to remove the marrow, allow to dry for 3 or 4 days. Put in a blender (or spice grinder) and pulverize in powder form. Store in a clean jar.

Making sugar with citrus

Be sure to extract citrus powder and add the sugar, or you can use fresh twists, put them in a jar with sugar, let the peel oil infuse the sugar and stir.

Lemon pepper

Mix the lemon extract powder with pepper and get a very different but incredibly healthy ingredient.

Make infusions

Infuse honey or vinegar with citrus peels in the blender and let the flavors concentrate. Strain the liquid and store it in a clean jar.

Vegetables soup

Boil potato peel, onion peel, carrot peel, leek, and other vegetables to make delicious and healthy broths full of flavor.

For beauty treatments

There are a large number of natural treatments to restore shine to the skin, hydrate the face, combat acne formation and more treatments that can be performed with the peels of fruits and vegetables.

Make a natural banana scrub

Sprinkle the sugar on the inside of the banana peels and use it as a scrub luffa. Gently rub all over your body and then rinse off in the shower, this is a natural way to exfoliate your skin.

Facial renovator

To perform a facial tonic and renew your skin, rub the orange or grapefruit peels on the face (avoiding the eyes) and then rinse gently with warm water.

Hydrate the skin

Rub the fleshy part of an avocado peel on your face and get better benefits for your skin than if you did it with a commercial moisturizer.

Relieve swelling

Potato peels can reduce puffiness around the eyes, press the wet part of the fresh peels on the skin (the inner side of the peels) for 15 minutes and you will get a beun home remedy to reduce bags under the eyes.
