Overwatch analysis

Overwatch is one of the most popular so-called hero-based shooters on the market. He fills stadiums with his competitions and has fallen in love with millions of players on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Now it is the turn of Switch, will Overwatch conquer the community of Nintendo players?

  • Is Overwatch worth it on Nintendo Switch?

In the last Nintendo Direct, the Japanese company showed us the arrival of Overwatch to Switch as soon as the announcements started. This is a highly anticipated release since Overwatch is a game that, despite the passing of the years, continues to maintain an enviable competitive community. Switch was, therefore, the last and most anticipated stop.

With the purchase of the game, a three-month subscription to Nintendo Switch Online is included since, remember, Overwatch does not have a campaign mode and is a game directed 100% to multiplayer. It does not make much sense to analyze Overwatch itself at this point in 2019, so in this text I will limit myself to telling you in detail how the Nintendo Switch version works.

Performance and graphics

It is difficult to bring a game to Nintendo Switch. The hybrid console objectively has less power than its current generation comrades, and therefore a certain degree of cut-out is always visible in the visual section . Luckily, the Overwatch case isn’t particularly bloody, and the game looks good on the Nintendo Switch. In portable mode it hits some scratches at the beginning of the game and obviously the graphics are worse, but nothing that a priori affects the gameplay.

Overwatch – Nintendo Switch

Sometimes Overwatch can have a lot of information on the screen, and it is very important to be clear about what is happening. In the game there can be long distances at times, and in handheld mode the details are not very well appreciated. That, obviously, is the sacrifice we have to make to be able to play anywhere. If you are interested in exploring the competitive terrain and learning the basics well, it is better to start playing with the console in the dock, where everything is much clearer.

Controls and gameplay

Personally, I come from playing Overwatch for many hours on PC, and therefore, doing it with a controller in hand is quite strange to me. However, thanks to experience I have been able to compare both sensations and I have to say that the control palette on Switch (and on the rest of the consoles, be careful) does not quite convince me. Mainly because practically all the action is focused on the triggers , leaving the buttons on the right for more circumstantial actions (except jumping, which is used all the time). This is simply a personal opinion, but it is not a “problem” unique to Switch.

What is unique to the Switch is the gyroscope, which opens up endless possibilities. Games like Splatoon 2 make a lot of use of this mechanic on a professional level, but it remains to be seen if the same will happen to Overwatch. Blizzard’s shooter is even more frenetic than Splatoon, so the gyroscope can sometimes come in handy. However, most of the time the mechanics have done me more harm than good, but it is up to you to judge whether it is worth it or not . If this is your first time playing Overwatch, try which setting works best for you when aiming. Overwatch is a very fast game, and you must choose the one that best suits your reflexes ability.

How is the meta?

Now I am writing to those of you who already know the basics of the game and have thought about making the leap to Nintendo Switch. If you come from PC, you will notice that in the games a fairly similar scheme of heroes is repeated in all the games. On consoles in general, much more heroes are used that do not require too much precision when aiming , therefore, picks such as Doomfist, Moira or Reinhardt are very powerful. Hanzos and Widowmakers are still seen in games, but certainly not as often.

However, this data is not significant as the servers have just been opened and a lot of people are simply testing characters. What I have seen in the games is that these types of heroes are the ones who usually pull the cart, but this does not mean that later on, the meta will remain like that . Perhaps over time people will take on a greater variety of characters, everything will be seen.

Is Overwatch worth it on Nintendo Switch?

Overwatch on Switch rents if it is the first time you approach the video game. If you have played on another platform, the only thing that the hybrid can offer you is portability, and although it is good to play a few games, it will not be where you spend most of the hours. If you are a regular player in portable mode, surely you get used to it, but of course the game is enjoyed more and better with the console in the dock . If you were waiting for the opportunity to test the Blizzard title, you have no excuse.
