Non-Surgical Reflux Treatment

In the treatment of reflux disease, which is the nightmare of 25 percent of the Turkish society, a success rate of 90 percent was achieved with the method applied for the first time.

Endoscopic Fundoplication has been practiced around the world since 2010. Yeditepe University Koşuyolu Hospital Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. was the first person to apply the treatment in Turkey. Dr. Cengiz Pat. Stating that the patient regained his health after an endoscopy operation of 45 to one hour,  Yeditepe University  Koşuyolu Hospital  Internal Medicine and  Gastroenterology Specialist  Prof. Dr. Cengiz Pata said, “This is a permanent treatment method and the success rate is 90 percent. We will completely solve the reflux problem with this treatment.”

It is used very frequently in the world

Explaining that endoscopic fundoplication treatments have been applied frequently in the world in recent years, Prof. Dr. Cengiz Pata said, “Reflux disease is a very common disease and affects almost 25 percent of the population. We do not have a chance to cure this chronic disease with drugs. Definitive treatment is either surgery or some endoscopic anti-reflux (EART) treatment, which we call Endoscopic Fundoplication in recent years. “In fact, one of them was a treatment method in which we applied a high degree of electric current to the lower end of the esophagus. We have used this method for years. We have achieved successful results in many of our patients. But of course, medicine is constantly developing and new treatments are emerging. Endoscopic Anti Reflux Treatment.” one of them. In fact, it is one of the most frequently used treatment methods in the world these days.”

We Will Solve The Reflux Problem

Expressing that they gave the patient general anesthesia and discharged him on the same day, Prof. Dr. Cengiz Pata gave the following information about the transaction:

“We put the patient to sleep completely and the surgeons narrow the esophagus by wrapping it from the outside. We also apply the technique of narrowing the large area by putting endoscopy, there are some sutures that we can call as staples to the esophagus from inside. “While the success of the endoscopic laser methods we have used in the past is 50-60 percent, the success of this method is 80-90 percent. We have applied it to two patients so far, and the results are extremely successful. We discharged the patients immediately. I think we will solve the reflux problem in this way.”

Can We Apply This Treatment To Every Reflux?

Underlining that the treatment is permanent, Prof. Dr. Cengiz Pata said, “It is a treatment that is more resistant and that we can achieve successful results in the long term. I think we will prefer it more in the future. We do not say ‘let’s treat it’ for every reflux. Many symptoms can be confused with reflux, so a definitive diagnosis should be made. “Gastroscopy, an accurate PH meter test and, if necessary, a manometry test should be performed. After these, if there is a diagnosis of reflux, it is time to choose the right treatment. First, we will choose the right patient, and then we will apply the right treatment,” he said.

A 45 Minute Process

Stating that the procedure is extremely easy for the patient, Prof. Dr. Cengiz Pata said, “As if the patient has come for an endoscopy, we first put the patient to sleep by giving them a light medicine. During the procedure, we enter the throat with a slightly larger device than normal gastroscopy. We perform a procedure that takes between 45 minutes and an hour with general anesthesia. After the procedure, the patient is 4 to 6 hours old. “If everything is okay, we discharge the patient. That day, the patient may only have a little sore throat,” he said.

What are the Causes of Reflux?

Explaining that gastroesophageal reflux disease has spread like an epidemic, Prof. Dr. Cengiz Pata said , “It is seen in one out of four people in the society. It is a serious  health problem; why has it started to be seen more frequently? Of course, large epidemiological studies are necessary to speak for sure. However, obesity is a serious problem and we are constantly gaining weight. Europe”When we look at it, Türkiye is almost in the first place in obesity. Obesity affects reflux in the first degree. We do not spare time for movement and sports. Beyond that, our eating habits have changed, we are consuming dry foods, which we can call fast food, more often instead of classic watery foods. We know that these lead to increased reflux. The most important measure is to eat little and often. Even if you drink water, you should pay attention to this. It is important to have a light dinner. Stop eating and drinking 2 hours before going to bed. Sleeping on a slightly higher pillow will provide comfort to patients,” he warned.
