Netbook

Netbook . New class of laptops that eliminate the CD drive , and sometimes other components such as graphics card, in order to reduce the physical size of the machines (and sometimes the cost), capable of entering the pocket of a pants , as in This is the case with the VAIO P-series. Their processing power is significantly less than normal notebooks, so they need specifically designed operating systems, in addition to the use of remote storage.

History

HP Netbook

The origins of the subnotebook can be traced to the Network Computer (NC) concept of the mid- 1990s . In March of 1997 , Apple Computer introduced the eMate 300 as a subcompact laptop that was a mixture of the Newton PDA Apple and a conventional laptop.

The eMate was discontinued, with all other Newton series devices, in 1998 with the return of Steve Jobs . More recently, Psion’s now-discontinued line, the OLPC XO-1 (initially called the $ 100 laptop) and the Palm Foleo were all small, portable, network-capable computers. The generic use of the term “subnotebook”, however, began in 2007 when Asus unveiled the ASUS Eee PC .

Originally designed for emerging markets, the 23 x 17 cm (8.9 “× 6.5”) device weighed approximately 0.9 kilograms (2 pounds) and had a 18 cm (7-inch) screen, a keyboard approximately 85% the size from a normal keyboard, a memory stick, an adapted version of Linux , a simplified interface geared towards subnotebook use.

Now most subnotebooks come with a 25.6 cm (10.1 inch) screen, and with better processors (1.6 Ghz is normal). Although its weak point is still the graphics card and the core frequency.

Most of them also have the HyperThreading function built into their kernel , which tries to simulate the function of a dual core, using two lines of processes at the same time.
