What is meant by a seam of coal ?

Coal is found not in large solid masses as a rule but.in layers called seams. Some of these are only a few inches
thick, whilst others are many feet in thickness. The seams are generally separated from each other by layers
of stone or clay. They are generally found so far below the surface of the ground that mines have to be sunk in
order to get the coal out.
