Interstitium (organ)

The Interstitium is the name given to the “new organ” of the human body that, according to media sources, science discovered in 2018; They echoed the discovery of a new organ in the human body that had remained hidden until now: the interstitium. While some claim that it is time to rewrite the anatomy books, others point out that the structure has been in them for centuries. It is the cavity that surrounds the lungs, digestive and excretory organs, blood vessels, and muscles.

Definitions

The DRAE

The Royal Spanish Academy defines:

  • Interstitium (Del lat. Interstitium.):
  1. . Slit or space, usually small, that mediates between two bodies or between two parts of the same body.
  2. . Interval (space or distance between two times or two places).

Biology

The biology uses this term with different meanings and includes “human organ” from the “discovery” of a group of scientists from the Department of Pathology, School of Medicine, New York University, United States. In Anatomy it was always considered as “a small space or indentation in an organic tissue”.

Interstice

The Interstice:

  • They spread throughout the body and transport the liquid that allows the movement of the rest of the internal organs.
  • It is a microscopic cavity that protects the internal organs and allows the elasticity of the muscles, the transit of the cardiovascular system and the viscera.
  • It is a collagen and elastin membrane that transports 20 percent of the body’s fluid and lines the digestive system , urinary system, lungs , veins, and muscle fibers .

Discovery

  • Using confocal laser endomicroscopy (a kind of sensor laser endoscopy) performed on a cancer patient, the scientists examined the bile duct (liver ducts) and visualized the new transporter duct.
  • Experts warned that the interstitium could accelerate the transmission and expansion of cancer cells in the body.

Opposing views

“It is fair to say that pathologists and histologists have long known that there is an interstitial space and that it contains fluid. The claim that this is a hitherto unknown organ, the largest yet, seems forced (…) Most biologists would be reluctant to call unequal fluid-containing microscopic spaces between tissues an organ. By that definition, the abdominal cavity and the pleura would also be “.

Anirban Maitran, researcher, University of Texas MDA Anderson Cancer Center

“The idea that it is ‘a new organ or that something new and previously unidentified has been discovered in the human body’ is clearly false (…) There are thousands of publications about it and surgeons know it well.”

Mark Westneat, medical researcher at the University of Chicago.

“The only organs that are made these days are the ones that appear on stage in music.”

James William, Director of the Rush University Human Anatomy Laboratory.

… “the anatomy and composition of the interstitial space between cells is increasingly understood”.

Science and non-specialized media

  • The media appropriate scientific facts from the spectacular perspective of the flow of opinion and social networks in this century.
  • What is valuable to science: Reveal another mystery, and surely its implications for diagnosis, oncology and other disciplines.
