International Telecommunication Union (ITU) .

ITU is the specialized agency of the United Nations for information and communication technologies – ICT. It is headquartered in Geneva ( Switzerland ), and has 12 regional and area offices worldwide. ITU currently has 193 member countries and more than 700 private sector entities and academic institutions.

the beginning

Day 3 of September of 1932 , began in Madrid Spain joint meeting of the XIII Conference of the Union International Telegraph UTI, created in Paris the 17 of maypole of 1865 , and III of the Union Radiotelegraphic International URI and day 9 of December of the same year, by virtue of the agreements reached in said meeting, the Agreement was signed by which the International Telecommunication Union was created , which in the future would replace the two previous organizations UTI and URI. The new name began to be used from January 1934 .

As the global coordinator for governments and the private sector, ITU’s role includes:

Three fundamental sectors

  • ITU-T: Telecommunication Standardization Sector formerly CCITT.
  • ITU-R: Radiocommunication Standardization Sector formerly CCIR.
  • ITU-D: Telecommunication Development Sector, this is new.

It also organizes TELECOM events and was the main sponsoring entity of the World Summit on the Information Society .

Headquarters and members

The ITU is based in Geneva, Switzerland and is made up of 192 Member States and more than 700 Sector Members in general, the regulations generated by the ITU are contained in a wide set of documents called Recommendations, grouped by Series. Each series is made up of the Recommendations corresponding to the same topic, for example Pricing, Maintenance, etc. Although the Recommendations are never “ordered”, they are only “recommended”, their content, at the level of international relations, is considered mandatory by the Administrations and Companies.

ITU in Informatics 2011

The ITU, was present at Computing 2011 and according to Hamadoun Touré, Secretary General of the ITU, works to solve the violation of the international radio regulations that affect the radio spectrum of Cuba , in addition to the fact that the problems of radio violation are not technical problems but politicians, and he announced that he has been working with some officials to find the solution.

Hamadoun Toré gave a conference on the need to access new technologies as well as having the possibility to create and share, affirming that broadband Internet connection is a fundamental ally in achieving the millennium goals. He assured that faster access on the network would contribute to reducing food vulnerabilities, health problems and access to jobs.
