How to unlock the pickaxe in Valheim

Most of Valheim’s tools can be put together in the initial stages of exploration. Not so, the mighty peak. There are several different Valheim spikes available, but in order to unlock them and start mining for minerals, you’ll need to conquer some terrifying challenges first. In this guide we will explain how to unlock spikes in Valheim, as well as showing you all the different types of spikes available.

How to unlock the pickaxe in Valheim

Valheim’s first peak is the Antler Pickaxe. However, achieving this requires facing the first boss in the game. To unlock the peak in Valheim you must defeat Eikthyr , the deer boss found using the Vegvisir rune next to the Eikthyr trophy stone at your spawn point. Head to the marked location and sacrifice two deer trophies to summon the boss. Take him down and he’ll collect a Hard Antler needed to unlock the pickaxe recipe in Valheim.

To make the Antler Pickaxe, you will need a workbench and the following ingredients:

10 x wood
1 x hard pole

The antler pick will allow you to mine copper and tin, but there are much better picks in Valheim once you know how to craft them. We’ve broken down all of the Valheim Spikes below so you can unlock and craft them ASAP.

How to unlock the bronze pickaxe in Valheim

To unlock the Bronze Pickaxe you will need the following ingredients:

3 x Core Wood (harvested from the tall pines in the Black Forest)
10 x bronze

Core Wood is pretty simple, but Bronze will require you to melt tin and copper together. To craft a foundry, you must take five hatchling cores from chests and hatchlings from the swamp biomes, then hit them with a stone. Use your antler pick to mine some copper, then melt six copper to create a forge. You can then use the forge to melt bronze with copper and tin that you harvest with your antler pick to unlock the recipe for the bronze pick in Valheim.

How to unlock the iron pickaxe in Valheim

Valheim’s next peak is iron. The Iron Pickaxe has higher durability and faster mining speed than the Bronze, but it won’t unlock new mining opportunities. Getting this one requires you to collect more core wood and, you guessed it, iron:

To get Iron, you will first need to upgrade your Forge by making a Forge Cooler with Fine Wood. Once you’ve updated that, go out there and collect scrap iron from the muddy scrap piles with your previously crafted bronze pickaxe. Hit enough scrap iron in your forge and you’ll get the resources you need to unlock the iron pickaxe at your Valheim workbench.

Now that you know the Peaks of Valheim and how to unlock the Antler, Bronze, and Iron versions, you can use this handy tool to mine resources or break rocks. Just remember to repair your tools often to keep them in tip-top shape! For more Valheim guides, head over to our hub page for the game.
