How to get rid of lag

The lag in the context of gaming, is the delay between the actions of the player and server responses. Lag can be caused by the connection, but also by a computer that is not powerful enough. The tolerance for lag varies by game type. Let’s see how to eliminate the lag and resume the game.

What does it mean to mend or laggare

Sometimes many complain because they are lagging, but in reality they should complain because they are mending. If you don’t know the meaning of these two terms, consult this article: What does it mean to laggare and marm ?

What to do to eliminate lag in games

Check the minimum requirements of the game you are playing on, if your configuration is very close to that required, first lower the video quality of the game to the minimum, disable all the extra options, and remove the shadows if possible.

Once this is done you may notice a clear improvement in the fluidity of the game, sometimes some big lagging are caused by too many effects of the game, which make our beloved dinosaur sweat until it slows down.

For example, if your problem is RAM memory, but you cannot increase it, due to budget, or precisely because your PC does not accept more than what you already have, there is the ReadyBoost solution and with a simple USB stick you can improve a bit the situation.

Now let’s do a good scan to eliminate viruses, adware, etc. Do a full scan with your antivirus, if you don’t have one you can find a selection here: The best free antivirus .

Now do some cleaning with CCleaner and MalwareBytes’ Anti-Malware . Now that we’ve cleaned up the PC, let’s do a few more tweaks.

Close unnecessary applications

You should “kill” any unnecessary processes so as not to waste resources unnecessarily. You could do it manually or use a program that does it for you: Game Booster.

Ethernet over WiFi

Playing over WiFi can be comfortable, but complaining about lag when playing games on a laptop 12 meters from the router is simply absurd. You could also solve all your problems by approaching the router and connecting by cable. Surely an ethernet cable is more stable than the WiFi connection and does not receive interference of any kind if the cable is healthy.

Change the DNS

Sometimes our ISPs can hack into our ping and thus can make us lagging. Let’s try to bypass this problem by entering DNS other than theirs. Using the Google open DNS you can see a clear improvement: we also tried with OpenDNS, but the ping has even worsened, so we prefer to recommend Google’s ones. Simply use the following DNS servers:

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Note : to be able to modify them, the procedure to be performed is done directly in your OS, not in the browser.

Change DNS on Windows 7: Click on the Windows key , enter the Control Panel , go to Network and Sharing Center and finallyChange adapter settings . Right click on your active connection then click on Properties :

Double click on Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP / IPv4) and check the box for Use the following DNS server addresses and enter the values 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 :

Port Forwarding and Internal IP

Before opening the doors for our favorite game, it is a good idea to assign us a fixed internal IP. We go to the same tab that we opened before, but this time we check use the following IP address :

We fill in the fields like this:

192.168.1.x
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1

Instead of x enter the number you prefer, I usually use 80 which is a high number and hardly a device that I connect via WiFi or cable could receive that figure, usually the router automatically gives low values. In practice, every time you connect the router and the PC they assign you an internal IP and that number changes every time you disconnect and connect the connection to the router.

Well now let’s move on to port forwarding . Nothing could be simpler than following a nice guide complete with screenshots. Since there are countless routers out there, here’s a guidewhich will help you in your choice (it’s in English, but don’t despair, it’s really simple). Open the guide, choose the make and model of your router, choose the game you want to optimize and follow the instructions.

Well now try running your game and you should notice a noticeable difference. If nothing has changed, you most likely can’t do much except call your ISP and make sure that the problem isn’t theirs, perhaps causing too old telephone systems.
