Henry N. Cobb

Henry Nichols Cobb ( Boston , 8 as April as 1926 – New York , 2 March as as 2020 ) was an American architect. One of the three founding directors of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, he has actively and continuously contributed to the work of the company since its inception in 1955.

Biographical synthesis

Henry Nichols Cobb studied at the Plillips Exeter Academy ( 1944 ), Harvard College ( 1947 ), and the Harvard GSD ( 1949 ). In 1949 he worked for Hugh Stubbins and since 1950 at Webb & Knapp, Inc., Division of Architecture. In 1955 he was a founding partner of IM Pei & Associates, and in 1989 of Pei, Cobb, Freed & Partners. He has been a professor at the Universities of Yale (1973-78) and Harvard (1980-88), and an Architect-in-Residence at the American Academy of Rome in 1992.

Among the awards and distinctions he has received are: Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize in Architecture (1977), Poses Creative Arts Award, Bradeis University (1981), Gold Medal from the AIA of New York ( 1982 ), Doctor Honoris Causa, Bowdoin College ( 1985 ), Chicago Architecture Prize, AIA Chicago (1985), Doctor Honoris Causa, ETH Zurich (1990).

Mr. Cobb was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the National Academy of Design. He received several awards of recognition for his achievements as an architect and educator, including the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize, awarded by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Medal of Poses Prize for the Creative Arts in Architecture, Brandeis University, the Parker Harleston Medal, Boston Society of Architects, Medal of Honor (1982) and President’s Award (2010), New York Chapter, AFP, Chicago Architecture Award, Illinois Council of the AIA, James Daniel Bybee Award, stone building of the Institute, and the Topaz Medallion for Excellence in architect training,
