Biographical synthesis

He was born in Rockwall , Texas , United States ; in the year 1915 . His father was a Texas state judge, so Henry Wade soon followed his father’s path and, after high school at Rockwall, began a law degree at the University of Texas . After obtaining the title in 1946 , Wade worked briefly as a federal agent for the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), before in 1947 he was appointed assistant district attorney in Dallas . His life would be united forever with the judiciary of the Texas capital, since in 1951Wade took over as chief prosecutor, a position he would hold until his retirement in 1987 .

At the head of the prosecution, Wade was considered one of the most severe and responsible American judges, the implacable face of the law in the state of Texas. The Legend of The Chief ( Chief ) and read his popular nickname, began to take shape in 1963 , when he had to act as prosecutor in the trial of Jack Ruby , author of the shot that ended the life of Lee Harvey Oswald , the famous arrested for the attack on US President Kennedy . In just two hours, Jack Ruby was sentenced to death, which meant an increase in his prestige among the citizens of Texas, since Judge Wade did show the capacity for action that American society demanded at that critical moment.

Professional failure

Regardless, the most famous episode involving Wade was also his biggest failure: the Roe v . Wade case . In 1970 , a woman, named Jane Roe to hide her true identity (her name was actually Norma McCorvey ), filed a lawsuit against the anti-abortion law of the state of Texas, which considered abortion a crime unless the life of the child was in danger. Mother. Jane Roe worked as a waitress at a local on the highwayTexan and was raped by several truckers, regular customers of the premises. Regardless of the judicial process against the rapists, when she became pregnant and did not want the child, Roe filed the lawsuit, which was repeatedly denied by the illustrious prosecutor Wade.

In parallel, the debate shook the entire United States, a debate in which various associations for and against abortion clashed in a spectacular display of media and demonstrations. Finally, in 1973, the Roe v. Wade case reached the United States Supreme Court , where by a minimal difference (5-4), the judges decided to recognize the right of American women to abort, repealing the previous law throughout the country. . The setback meant the end of his judicial career for Wade, as since 1973 his critics began to attack him, especially for the executions that Wade had signed against African-American criminals under racist laws. In 1987 Wade left public life and retired to his farm outside of Dallas.

Death
