Helio Uchoa

Helio Uchoa Cavalcanti, Brazilian architect recognized for his important contribution to the history of Brazilian National Architecture. He actively participated in the architectural renewal movement of his country. He was a partner of Oscar Niemeyer in various undertakings such as the Lagoa Hospital, in Rio de Janeiro, and the Ibirapuera Park, in São Paulo. He participated in the construction of Brasilia, in addition to having signed projects for residences and hotels in Brazil and abroad.

biographical synthesis

Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1913. In 1934 he graduated from the National School of Fine Arts. By 1940 he opened the architecture office in Rio de Janeiro, having Oscar Niemeyer and Affonso Eduardo Reidy as partners. In 1947 he joined the team that designed the Technical Institute of Aeronautics (ITA), as well as the Duchen Factory, located in São Paulo. In 1951, together with the architects Zenon Lutofo and Eduardo Kneesse de Mello, he participated in the preparation of the preliminary project for the construction of the Ibirapuera Park complex, headed by Oscar Niemeyer.

In that same year he exhibited at the São Paulo Biennial. In the same year he developed projects for the Retirement and Pensions Institute for Industrialists (IAPI), in addition to having signed the conception of a hotel in the municipality of Cabo Frio and the Banco Hipotecario Lar Brasileiro, in Goiânia. In 1954 he designed the residence of Francisco Pignatari, in São Paulo. Between 1956 and 1961 he worked on the execution of the first projects for the Brasilia superblock, conceiving the SQS 105 and SQS 305 blocks. In that last year he also carried out the project for the construction of a hotel in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. .

Tributes

He was honored by the Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB) with the creation of the Helio Uchoa Architect Award, offered annually to professionals who stand out in the production of architectural projects.

Acknowledgments

In 1953 he received an award at the International Architecture Exhibition of the II Bienal de São Paulo.

Death

He died in 1971 in Rio de Janeiro.
