Ghost ‘n Goblins Resurrection review.

Nintendo Switch receives a rare and incredibly pampered update of one of those classic titles that we so enjoyed in arcades during the 80s: Ghost ‘n Goblins Resurrection Long live the great Sir Arthur!

It’s time to admit it: arcades are a thing of the past, no matter how hard it has been for us to assimilate them to millions of players around the world (yes, Japan included). Fortunately, the legacy of these unforgettable venues is so rich, wonderful and impressive that at least I am convinced that it will never be completely neglected. And works like the one at hand, the sensational Ghosts’n Goblins Resurrection , is one of the best tests that could be presented to us… next to the recent Capcom Arcade Stadium . In fact and without exaggeration, it is possible to make a couple of statements about the title at hand without fear of being wrong.

The first is that it is one of the best installments of the franchise (if not the best of all globally), which and given the excellent quality of the main editions, are big words. And along with this, I also encourage you to place this new Capcom work as one of the best titles ever released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch eShop. Pure glory that has countless qualities that will delight veterans, but also all those new players who enter this dangerous fantasy world.

That said, and in case there is anyone who does not know what Ghosts’n Goblins is about, here we control a brave knight named Sir Arthur , with whom we must overcome a good handful of levels to rescue our beloved, who has been kidnapped by the monster on duty. A perfect example of what arcade experiences in the past had in store for us, which, today and as is the case, show that good ideas and simple concepts can continue to be just as attractive … and even more so if certain elements are added to the basic proposal very successful changes and innovations that I will explain in a moment.

Insurmountable challenge … in every way

Announcement trailer for Ghost ‘n Goblins Resurrection, a very special return for Nintendo Switch

Although describing Ghosts’n Goblins Resurrection is easy, it is not so easy to overcome its challenges. Progress through each of the levels is completely linear, that is, we simply have to get from one point A to another B. But of course, along the way it is necessary to carry out a good number of tasks, starting with the extermination of entire armies of enemies who, at higher difficulty levels, become as obnoxious as “bloody”. Difficulty levels? Yes, there are four to choose from, but do not panic among the most purist and nostalgic users: even at the lowest, it is not a ride.

The variety of levels and enemies he brings to the table is incredible. And yes, there is no shortage of final bosses.

It does not hurt me to say that I have embraced death on more occasions than I have been able to count … and that after having played in the two central difficulty levels. It is hard and sad to admit it, but seeing what I have seen, it has not even crossed my mind to get fully into Legend mode , which is in fact the level of difficulty that comes by default and the one that in theory every self-respecting player should enter if so, the car that I got off of … or rather, that I haven’t even tried to get on, unfortunately.

As was the case with the original arcade, we are facing a brutally complicated game , for masochists under what circumstances, although it is possible to soften it somewhat through the aids that provide the lowest levels of difficulty such as a greater number of checkpoints (some flags that, when you get to them, you become the happiest being on the face of the Earth), the possibility of wearing more resistant armor, etc. It is a tremendous challenge, but I assure you that it is such a good adventure that it is worth every second we invest in it.

From the outset, the way in which the phases are conceived is an absolute marvel. Combining levels that admirably recreate the same levels represented in both Ghosts’n Goblins and Ghouls’n Ghosts, but adding a number of magnificent changes to their respective designs, each phase is a veritable deluge of sensations . I’m not going to reveal anything so as not to spoil certain “aspects” that the title incorporates, but I assure you that each phase is clearly different from the previous one, has a unique personality and is perfectly recognizable. And of course, each one is guarded by the final shift boss, which will sound like the most veteran users… although they have been totally redone, routines included.

The face lift that has been done is sensational. Capcom has spent many hours redesigning characters and settings.

Another notable innovation is the integration of a “light” skill tree, which allows us (not without effort) to gain certain active and passive skills, use magic, free ourselves from death, etc. Less strength has another novelty, the local cooperative mode , which is somewhat rare since the second player controls a kind of entity that can help the protagonist in different ways, in the style of what is embodied in some Super Mario games, for example. A curiosity more than anything else.

It allows us to choose between four levels of difficulty, an idea that we have found wonderful because it is a very demanding game.

Nor do I want to leave aside another of the great assets that this production brings to the table: its incredible replayability . Beyond being necessary to give more than one turn (the end game is almost a restart of the adventure itself), the fact of being able to choose between some levels, the possibility of collecting fairies or accessing hidden areas of the scenarios they hide Challenges of all kinds add a lot of life to the title. And if we add to this what we have already told you about its demanding level of challenge, it is a very long-lasting game… unless you throw in the towel before reaching the end, of course.

It is such a good adventure that it is worth every second we invest in itA production that, as the icing on the cake, has a very careful audiovisual section. It is not a triple A under any circumstances, but it is not necessary. It is true that the aesthetics that it has has somewhat divided the opinion of the users, but what there is no doubt is that the developers have taken care of everything that has to do with the appearance that all the characters and the scenarios show. . More than a game, it looks like a kind of fairy tale like Halloween, an authentic recital that has also been covered by a collection of melodies (rehashes of mythical songs that are mixed with other unpublished compositions) absolutely memorable, which add more quality if possible to a title that, in case I have not already made it very clear , is an ode to good work in each and every one of its aspects.

“Classic and wonderful”

Ghost ‘n Goblins Resurrection

Capcom shows that it is one of the most fit companies of the moment. On this occasion, Ghosts’n Goblins has been reinterpreted flawlessly, remaking all its visuals, implementing levels based on both the original and its sequel, Ghouls’n Ghosts, and adding quite a few innovations. Classic and wonderful fun for masochists that becomes one of the big releases so far this year on Nintendo Switch. When will the physical version for collectors?

5 things you should know:

  • It is a revision of the arcade classic from the mid-80s, but with many improvements and changes.
  • We can choose between a couple of different paths at the beginning, levels based on both Ghosts’n Goblins and Ghouls’n Ghosts.
  • Even playing at the lowest difficulty levels of the four it includes, it is still a very demanding title.
  • A kind of local cooperative mode has been integrated, in which the second player controls an entity that helps Sir Arthur.
  • The control is a real marvel, and we are not allowed to vary the trajectory of the protagonist once he makes a jump … just like in the old days!
