Why is it generally cooler on the top of a mountain than in a valley ?

The atmosphere takes very little heat from the sun’s rays as they pass through it. It is heated by contact
with the eirth which has absorbed the solar heat, and also by radiation fiom the surface of the earth. A larger
proportion of the air is closei to the earth in a flat place than on the tops of mountains,
