Biographical synthesis

He was born on 25 as July as 1956 , in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States . Daughter of William Howard Arnold , nuclear physicist.

In 1979, he graduated in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University, and in 1985, he received a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, where he did postdoctoral research in biophysical chemistry.

She married James E. Bailey, with whom she had her son, James. She later married Andrew E. Lange and had two other children, William and Joseph.

Trajectory

Professor of chemical engineering, bioengineering, and biochemistry at the California Institute of Technology, where she studies evolution and its applications in chemistry, science, and medicine.

Research

In 1993, he achieved the first direct evolution of an enzyme in the laboratory. These proteins are responsible for accelerating the chemical reactions that occur in all kinds of biological functions of living beings, such as the transformation of food into energy to move, digest or think in the case of humans. Since then, he has refined the methods commonly used to develop new catalysts.

In 2016, she was the first woman to win the Millennium Technology Award. A year later he received the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Award for Convergence Research from the National Academy of Sciences. She was also one of the founders of the Gevo company, a leader in renewable chemicals and advanced biofuels, and the inventor of numerous patents.

On October 3, 2018, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry , shared with George P. Smith and Gregory P. Winter, for using the principles of evolution to develop proteins and antibodies to cure disease and develop chemicals, such as biofuels. or drugs, in a cleaner and more efficient way, according to the Royal Academy of Sciences. Becoming the fifth woman to receive this award.
