History

Flowers are an element that has been in people’s lives since its inception. Some studies reveal pollen samples dating back to Neanderthal times , reflecting its presence as a symbol ever since. For a long time, people believed that they possessed magical powers or associated them with religious symbols because of their use within the Bible.

However, in the seventeenth century, during the time of Queen Victoria, flowers became a way to express any feeling. From the type to the way the flower was delivered, they had meaning, thus creating a kind of language called floriography . In addition to having a whole language, in each region the myth that was formulated around the origin of flowers and flower arrangements determined its meaning.

Basic forms of arrangements

As far as style is concerned, there are several ways to assemble flower arrangements. And for each rendering, coordination, line, and fill flowers are the basic principles for a floral composition. One of the differences is the shape of the design. When beginning the representation, the flower line is fundamental to determine its character. Continuing through the coordinating flowers and ending with the filler ones.

Pyramid

Pyramid shape

It is an arrangement that has well-defined characteristics. Although it is not widely used as decoration, it is also worth mentioning. Its base is shaped like a triangle and retains a considerable height, reproducing a pyramid . It can be used as a centerpiece or for a room divider because it is full view.

Dome

It is a flower arrangement, as the name implies, round in shape. It is advisable to use a medium-height container. It is an integral composition with the same flower distribution around it. Much used in decoration, due to its simplicity in assembly. It is usually used as a centerpiece, as a room divider or as a small decoration of the place.

Half Moon

Half Moon Shape

It is a design that resembles the shape of the moon and a “C”. The creation of the curve in this type of arrangement is asymmetric . For this reason, it must be very well proportioned from any angle you look at it. When it comes to weight, it will need to be balanced for a stable arrangement. The choice of materials is very important, so that it allows to achieve the curvature in the composition. Therefore, flowers and foliage with natural curved lines are indispensable in this design. As it has a single front, it is used with a wall or background curtain.

Horizontal

Horizontal shape

A classic symmetrical horizontal arrangement is one that maintains the same length on both sides. Even the representation of the flowers on one side is reflected on the other. It represents a calm and restful style, because it gives a feeling of tranquility and stability. Widely used as a centerpiece, either for a dining room or a coffee table. Unlike the previous one, in the asymmetric horizontal the length of the sides are not equal. Preserve more character and design because flowers have their own personality. A horizontal performance composition is short in height and long in width. The relationship between height and length must be 1/4. Remember that this is as a guide, in floral art you can experience different representations.

Inverted t

Inverted T shape

It is a basic type of arrangement, similar to the shape of the letter “T” but reversed. The height is about twice the length of one end. Considering that this type of composition has an asymmetric arrangement, the length of one side may be different from the other.

Shape of “L”

L shape

It is presented as a basic arrangement with an “L” shape, asymmetrical. The vertical line can be longer than the horizontal line and vice versa. It is usually used on a table to decorate environments. If it were an interpretive arrangement, its lines will be uneven as well as the distribution of the flowers that will be grouped.

Fan

This design is shaped like semicircles, with a balanced and symmetrical front. They tend to be wider than they are tall. The flowers used in this arrangement start from the central point and are located with the same inclination on each side of the central axis, thus taking the shape of a fan. Spike flowers are used such as alelis , gladioli , tuberose , iris , etc.

Triangular

For the assembly of a symmetrical triangular arrangement, the position of the flowers in line will be arranged in such a way as to form a triangle. The height of the composition will have a greater length in proportion to the width. In the case of the asymmetric triangular, the height will be higher than the base but it is longer on one of its sides. It should be noted that it is a classic style, which is still in force today, widely used in ceremonies.

Oval

There are two types of [oval arrangements. The oval style is a variation of a circular shape, with an ellipse shape in sight. They are balanced symmetrically and generally have only one front, although you can also be full-view. Consider the shape of a bush, where the top and side points meet. Another design is the oval pointed, which tends to be more elongated than the oval. So much so that its shape resembles that of a drop of water. In both cases, the largest and brightest flowers are generally located in the center and the smaller ones at the edges.

Vertical

Vertical Shape

It is a style that represents power and strength. The flower arrangement will be essentially vertical, with few flowers or leaves in other directions. In a true upright design, the flowers stay within the width of the container and rarely extend beyond the sides. Are used roses , lilies , gerberas , gladiolus , tuberose , iris , anthurium , wallflowers , among others. This design is quite tall and short.

Hogarth curve

The flowers in this type of arrangement are arranged to roughly form an “S”. It is quite complex and requires a lot of professional skill. It can be visualized as two semicircles, one located on top of the other, considering the “S” that both form. The stems of the flowers that make up the arrangement should curve gently.

Minimalist

It is an arrangement that is characterized by using a minimum amount of flowers and foliage. The main point is on the coordinating flower. Different compositions can be created, by determining the height and a horizontal line for a basic style. The theory that is applied is that fewer components are more representative.

Landscape style

Landscape style

This type of arrangement has the peculiarity of resembling a part of nature, such as green areas or gardens. Flowers, foliage, and branches are used to represent the landscape design. Materials such as moss, sand, stones or dry foliage are used to provide details to the composition.

Ikebana

It is the Japanese art of flower arranging. It is a representation of disciplined art in which the floral composition is a living being, in which humanity and nature as a whole are turned . A philosophy is impregnated to develop a closeness with nature. As with the other arts, Ikebana is a creative expression that contains certain construction rules. The materials used have life, flowers, herbs, leaves and branches. Its soul is the beauty that results from natural forms, color combinations, elegant design and the meaning of all that composition.

Ikebana shape

Ikebana goes beyond the limits of floral decoration, it is pure art, just like sculpture and painting. It has a history backed by ancient theories that have to do with creativity. In Japan, flower arrangements are used as decoration, on the same level as artistic objects such as paintings or sculptures.
