Background

Since the beginning of civilization holes for trees or bury poles planted were made with a crowbar , a crowbar or other finished material in a kind of wedge, which our Indians called coa , a name still used in Cuba.

A notable improvement to this instrument is the drill holes, which have the advantage that they have two cutting pieces, operated one with each hand, and that when closed they trap the removed soil to remove it from the hole. Furthermore, the shape of these pieces allows vertical cylindrical holes to be formed with very precise edges.

Features and operation

A common drill has a height of 1.3 to 2.0 m, mass of 2.7 to 4.6 kg, and width of digging parts from 120 to 140 mm. The thickness of the sheet (SAE 1070 or 2010 steel) is 2.5 mm. The worker brings the two handles closer together, which opens the digging blades, buries them firmly in the ground, and opens the handles so that the blades unite and squeeze the removed soil. Then take the hole digger out of the hole and bring the handles back so that the digging blades release the extracted soil.

Component parts

Digging leaves . They are the fundamental part, and consist of two pieces made of shaped (curved) steel sheets, pointed ends, and endowed with a cutting edge. They have a cylindrical part (eye), which are the holes where the handles are placed. The two leaves are articulated in their central part by means of a pin.

Mangos . They are generally circular in section, made of wood or steel tubes . They are firmly inserted into the eye of the digger blade
