    • Ethanol: C2H5OH. It has two carbon atoms.
    • Methanol: CH3OH. It has one carbon atom.
  2. Sources:
    • Ethanol: Commonly found in alcoholic beverages like beer, wine, and spirits. It is produced naturally during the fermentation of sugars by yeast.
    • Methanol: Naturally occurring in some fruits and vegetables but in very small amounts. It’s mainly produced industrially from natural gas.
  3. Uses:
    • Ethanol: Apart from being used in alcoholic beverages, it’s also used as a disinfectant, solvent, in the manufacture of personal care products, and as a fuel (either directly or in the form of ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE)).
    • Methanol: Used mainly as an industrial solvent, antifreeze, fuel, and as a feedstock for producing formaldehyde and other chemicals. It’s also found in some windshield washer fluids.
  4. Toxicity:
    • Ethanol: While excessive consumption can be harmful and lead to alcohol poisoning, ethanol is generally safe for consumption in moderate amounts.
    • Methanol: Highly toxic to humans. Even small amounts can be lethal if ingested. Methanol poisoning can lead to symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, and in severe cases, blindness or death. The body metabolizes methanol into formaldehyde and formic acid, both of which are toxic.
  5. Antidote for Poisoning:
    • Ethanol: Generally, there’s no specific antidote for ethanol poisoning, but supportive care (like IV fluids and respiratory support) is provided in cases of severe intoxication.
    • Methanol: Ethanol is actually used as an antidote for methanol poisoning. When someone is poisoned with methanol, administering ethanol can compete with methanol for the same metabolic pathways, slowing the formation of toxic metabolites.

It’s essential to be aware of the differences, especially regarding toxicity, as there have been cases of methanol being mistakenly consumed in place of ethanol, leading to severe poisoning or death.
