The mode of use of desmopressin varies according to the presentation form, and the main guidelines are:
- Central diabetes insipidus: The average adult dose is 1-2 sprays up to 2 times a day, while in children 1 sprays up to 2 times a day;
- Nocturnal enuresis: the starting dose is 1 0.2 mg tablet at bedtime and may be increased by the doctor throughout treatment;
- Nocturia: The starting dose is 1 tablet 0.1 mg at bedtime and may be increased by the doctor throughout treatment.
Desmopressin in nasal drops
- Diabetes insipidus central: The starting dose is 1 0.1 mg tablet three times a day and may then be adjusted by your doctor.
Desmopressin Side Effects
Desmopressin side effects include headache, nausea, stomach ache, bloating, weight gain, irritation and nightmares.
Desmopressin is contraindicated in patients with habitual and psychogenic polydipsia, heart failure, moderate to severe renal insufficiency, inappropriate ADH secretion syndrome, hyponatremia, risk of increased intracranial pressure or with hypersensitivity to desmopressin or any other component of the formula.
