Cyclohexanone

Cyclohexanone . It is a molecule cyclic composed of six atoms of carbon and with a functional group Ketones . It belongs to the group of cyclic ketones. It is a colorless liquid, whose odor is reminiscent of acetone . Cyclohexanone is water soluble and miscible with the most common organic solvents.

Obtaining

Cyclohexanone is obtained industrially mainly through two processes:

  • Catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane with atmospheric oxygen , which occurs through an unstable hydroperoxycyclohexane (or cyclohexyl hydroperoxide), which via a radical mechanism gives rise to a mixture of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol. The mixture a is distilled off , and the isolated cyclohexanol can then be oxidized or dehydrogenated to further cyclohexanone.
  • Hydrogenation catalyst of phenol with a catalyst of Pd / C .

Physical and chemical properties

  • Oily, white to pale yellow liquid
  • Soluble in water, alcohol, ether and other solvents
  • Characteristic odor of acetone and mint
  • Molecular weight = 98.14 (C6H10O)
  • Density = 0.9478 g / cm 33
  • Melting point = -31 Degree Celsius (° C)
  • Boiling point = 155.6 Degree Celsius (° C)

Common uses

Cyclohexanone is used as a solvent for cellulose acetate, nitrocellulose, natural resins, vinyl resins, crude rubber, waxes, fats, shellac, and DDT.
It is used to a large extent to obtain caprolactam, which is a monomer in the manufacture of Nylon 6 and also by oxidation of adipic acid that is used to manufacture Nylon 66. Other industrial ketones are methyl ethyl ketone (MEK, acronym English)

Transport and storage

Store in airtight containers
