Condom

Condom “Condus”. Receptacle. The condom or condom is a thin rubber or gut sheath or cover for the penis during intercourse, and for centuries it has been warned that it could protect against sexually transmitted diseases ( STDs ) and unwanted pregnancies.

With the development of rubber vulcanization , in the 1840s it was feasible to produce synthetic condoms. The introduction of liquid latex about a hundred years later paved the way for the highest tensile strength condoms.

History

In ancient times the Egyptians used penis protectors to protect themselves. Fallopium refers to condoms from sheep intestines .

Another story is attributed to Dr. Condom at the time of King Carlos II ( 1660 – 1685 ).

The King was alarmed by the number of children attributed to him and the good doctor solved the problem for him. In 1843 , Goooyear’s company designed the latex (rubber) condom.

In World War I with the advent of penicillin , preventive methods were left in the background, and in World War II condoms were given to soldiers and a debate on moral values and validity of the condom began, ending with the appearance of the the epidemic HIV / AIDS in the 80s and studies on the effectiveness of condoms.

Male condom

The male condom consists of a sheath that fits over the erect penis. Natural latex and polyurethane (used basically in cases of latex allergy) are commonly used for its manufacture.

Latex Male Condom

The male condom generally has a space at the closed end called a reservoir, designed to hold semen. Its measurements vary from 16 to 22 cm in length and from 3.5 to 6.4 cm in diameter. The standard measurement of a condom is 170 mm long, 48 mm nominal width and between 0.055 and 0.07 mm thick.

Condoms can come in natural color and throughout the rainbow range, and can be transparent, opaque and even phosphorescent. Some have prints on their surface. They can be smooth or with textures (rings, studs) to achieve a more intense sensation; with diverse aromas (vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, banana, coconut, among others); with special anatomical shapes to increase comfort or sensitivity; longer and wider or tight; thicker (extra strong) or thinner (sensitive); with flavored lubricant; not lubricated, lightly lubricated, extra lubricated, among others. Condoms are usually presented with a certain amount of lubricant and spermicide. If insufficient, lubricant can be added to facilitate sexual intercourse.

Female condom

The female condom, available in Europe since 1992, consists of a sheath or pouch that covers the inside of the vagina and the external genitalia. Initially they were made of polyurethane. Currently they are made of polyurethane, nitrile and latex. In addition to covering the genital lips and clitoris, it prevents the testicles from being exposed to or spreading sexually transmitted diseases (such as the human papilloma virus – HPV, HIV).

The female condom measures 160 to 180 mm long and 76 to 82 mm wide, its thickness varies between 0.041 mm and 0.061 mm. The condom opening has a ring with a radius of 65 mm. Inside there is another ring -not structurally integrated in the bag- that conforms to the condom, and that serves to insert it properly in the vagina

Disadvantages of the female condom

  • Currently expensive method
  • Usually requires partner approval

How does it work?

Correct placement of the male condom

The condom must be put on the erect penis immediately after reaching the erection, and before any contact with the partner’s vagina or anus, leaving an empty, air-free cavity at the upper end, to store the semen after ejaculation. If the penis is not circumcised, the foreskin should be pulled back and the glans completely exposed when in place. In the event that it is too long for the size of the penis to be inserted, it should not be unwound completely, but only enough to completely cover the penis. Only one condom should be used at a time. The use of a double condom (one on top of the other) is not recommended, as they can break due to the heat generated by friction between the two non-lubricated latex surfaces. If the partner’s vagina does not produce a good amount of natural lubrication, lubricant should be used to reduce abrasion from the condom.

The use of lubricant is practically necessary in anal sex, since the anal mucosa does not generate its own lubricant. An appropriate lubricant should be used depending on the material of the condom. With latex condoms, you should use a lubricant based on water and glycerin or medical silicone, since rubber is soluble in petrolatum and other substances present in petrolatum, baby oils and massage oils. Condoms made of polyurethane can be used with any type of lubricant, without deteriorating. To perform anal sex, you can get condoms specially designed for it (thicker, therefore more difficult to tear). The use of polyurethane condoms is not recommended for anal intercourse, because the effectiveness of polyurethane in providing protection in these situations has not been proven, and there is, instead, evidence of inflammation and tearing of the rectum when used in this way. The use of spermicide in anal practices is also dangerous, since there are studies that show that it affects the defenses of the rectal epithelium, weakening them, and therefore, making the user vulnerable to a sexually transmitted infection. Condoms should not be stored directly in the pants pocket, as friction and body heat for prolonged periods tend to weaken the latex. The same is true if condoms are kept in the glove compartment of the car. The penis should be removed immediately after ejaculation, when it is still erect, since not doing so involves unnecessary risk. When removing the penis from the vagina or anus, you should take the base of the condom with your fingers to prevent it from slipping and getting inside, with the risk of contagion or conception. Hands and penis should be washed before continuing sexual contact with the partner. For those who have never used a condom before, it is recommended to provoke an erection and put it alone. Women can also practice using an elongated vegetable (such as a cucumber or a carrot). Condoms are disposable, they should not be reused. The base of the condom must be taken with your fingers to prevent it from slipping and getting inside, with the risk of contagion or conception. Hands and penis should be washed before continuing sexual contact with the partner. For those who have never used a condom before, it is recommended to provoke an erection and put it alone. Women can also practice using an elongated vegetable (such as a cucumber or a carrot). Condoms are disposable, they should not be reused. Women can also practice using an elongated vegetable (such as a cucumber or a carrot). Condoms are disposable, they should not be reused. Women can also practice using an elongated vegetable (such as a cucumber or a carrot). Condoms are disposable, they should not be reused.

  • People who want to protect themselves against sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Condoms are currently the only contraceptive method for men, they allow them to take responsibility for protection against sexually transmitted diseases and against unwanted pregnancies.
  • Condoms are also a good option for people who cannot use other contraceptive methods.
  • It is very useful for those who have contracted HIV / AIDS.
