Location

Lake Chamo is located near the Arba Minch town located in the heart of the Rift Valley and is undoubtedly a mandatory visit not only for its beauty but also for the variety of human and fauna it houses.

Geographic situation

The lake is located just south of Lake Abaya and the town of Arba Minch, and east of the Guge Mountains. Lake Chamo is fed by the Kulfo River and several small streams, as well as by the overflow from Lake Abaya that reaches it through the Ualo River.

Fauna

One of the places in the country where there is the greatest diversity of fauna. At night, hundreds of hippos emerge from its waters to go to its grassy banks. It is also the refuge of thousands of Nile crocodiles , which can reach more than seven meters! If you fall into these waters infested literally by huge crocodiles and especially moody hippos, you run the serious risk of not telling it.

Aquatic environment

Cause tremendous respect a few meters away you can see tremendous jaws and little green eyes. The crocodiles of Lake Chamo are the largest, they can reach up to 7 meters in length.

Attractive Nature

But Lake Chamo also has other attractions for nature lovers, among which we can highlight a very varied bird fauna made up of large flocks of pelicans , cormorants and ospreys . Nor can we forget the innumerable groups of hippos that inhabit the lake and its shores and that undoubtedly constitute the greatest danger in the area, even the crocodiles avoid the presence of these great animals; in breeding season or on land it is better not to stand in their way.

Oscar Neumann

Exploring the area in 1901, he found a dry channel connecting Lake Chamo to the Sagan River , leading him to conclude that the lake feeds the Sagan in years of heavy rainfall.
