History

Before the settlement of the British , numerous aboriginal tribes already lived in the territory that now occupies the city of Cairns , the birth of the city is dated in 1876 .

Its name comes from the then governor of the state of Queensland , Australia , William Wellington Cairns .

At the beginning of the 20th century , the community began to receive a supply of water and electricity .

The December as October as 1923 was officially proclaimed city.

Cairns occupies an area of 1670 m 2 , is one of the most important tourist centers in its region and its population grows above the average for the country .

Geography

Location

It is located in the northeast of Australia . Its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef and its attractions have made it a tropical paradise.

It has a great variety of flora and fauna and the surroundings full of unique natural landscapes ( Palm Cove , Kuranda , Kewarra ). Its climate is hot .

Cairns enjoys a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: the dry season ( winter , from May to October ), with mild temperatures and little rainfall, and the wet season (from November to April , with tropical storms and high temperatures. Between December and April the area may suffer from the presence of cyclones .

Brotherhood

The city is twinned with others from different parts of the world: with the Japanese Oyama and Minami ; with the capital of Latvia , Riga ; with Sidney , from Canadian British Columbia; with Lae , a town in Papua New Guinea ; with the American Scottsdale , from the state of Arizona ; and with Zhanjiang , from China .

Transport

Airports

The Cairns International Airport operates both domestic and international flights. Some of the direct destinations it offers are the main Australian cities ( Sydney , Brisbane , Melbourne ), Tokyo , Nagoya , Osaka , Singapore , Hong Kong and Auckland . During the year, this airport supports a movement of more than 100,000 aircraft.

Cab

You can travel by taxi from the airport , at train stations and elsewhere in the city .

Car

Cars can be hired to get from other cities to Cairns. As it is not a very big city, there are not many traffic problems. You can also rent a car at the airport or at a branch within the city center.

Train

Train journeys are long because the distances between cities in Australia are great. In Cairns, you can use the Sunlander and the Tilt Train . The journey between Brisbane and Cairns takes just over 24 hours with the pendulum, while the Sunlander takes about 31 hours.

Bike

The city has cycle lanes
