History

About a million years ago, an asteroid about 100 m in diameter struck Earth . Falling in a lush jungle area of Ghana , Africa , the crater was filled with rainwater and it remains so today.

Location

It is located in Ghana . It is the only natural lake in the African country.

Description

The lake is called “Lake Bosumtwi” and has an approximate diameter of 8.5 km, although the crater actually reaches about 10 km, the depth of this lake is currently only 45 m, but actually the depth is almost 750 m, but the mud and silt accumulated on the bottom, has greatly reduced the figure.

The site has been investigated since 1931 , but evidence was only obtained 30 years later. Tektites were also present in the Ivory Coast as a result of the tremendous impact. They also discovered Coesite which is a variety of silicon dioxide formed by extreme explosions, in addition to other rocks shattered by the explosion.

Lake Bosumtwi, Ghana

It is approximately 8 kilometers wide and 750 meters deep, however, because there were periods in which the water level was so low allowing the forest to settle in the basin, the depth has been reduced to about 45 meters making it so in a kind of pond.

It is a place considered sacred by the Ashanti or Asantes (a very important ethnic group in Ghana with great importance in the area before European colonization) as they believe that the souls of the dead go there to say goodbye to the god Twi. Therefore, the act of fishing can only be done on wooden planks.

Lake beliefs

Utility

In a recreational place, that is, fishermen, for example, use the lake to fish, people in general to bathe and even boat trips are made through it.

It is a place considered sacred by the Ashanti or Asantes, a very important ethnic group in Ghana with great importance in the area before European colonization as they believe that the souls of the dead go there to say goodbye to the Twi god. Therefore, the act of fishing can only be done on wooden planks.

Weather

The weather has changed many times since the impact. Periods of heavy rains filled the crater with water, bringing the lake level to the discharge point. These periods are confirmed by the presence of fish fossils in the upper part of the crater walls. The water has even been sunk by an outfall from the river. But there were also periods when the water level was so low that the forest has been able to settle in the basin, reducing the lake to a kind of pond. This period lasted, according to legend, until there are about 300 years.
