Bocydium globulare

Bocydium globulare . The globular Bocydium: belongs to the membracide family and is of Brazilian origin. He is known above all for the impact he had on the German sculptor Alfred Keller.

Features

Its length is only 4 mm, the center of the pronotum (morphology of the head) rises a short vertical process that ends with a unique sculpture: in front of a set of 4 balls (keratin appendage like antlers), arranged in the same plane the vertices of a trapezium, this strange structure presents what could appear to be 4 eyes and several spines; a spiniform back process, slightly curved downwards, reaching as high as the top of the head, and the whole is surrounded by bristles.

Science does not know clearly what evolutionary function such morphology may have, but it is suspected that it uses it to defend itself from its predators, like other insects of the same family. To camouflage themselves, members of the Bocydium genus have developed incredible adaptations, which mimic horns, hair.

Habitat

They can be found in the treetops of the Brazilian jungles, although you have to look for them carefully because they do not reach one centimeter.
