Of course, I will try to focus on backgrounds a bit for all tastes, in order to find something that is good for the various types of players, but it is still a limited selection.

Before explaining what I believe to be the best PS4 themes , both free and paid, I think you might be interested in learning more about the customization possibilities offered by the Sony console.
Well, PS4 themes are essentially the wallpapers that appear behind the application tiles on the main screen of the operating system. However, contrary to what one might think, the changes made to the PlayStation 4 go beyond this page.
In fact, the theme also replaces the images of the settings and other system screens , giving life to a new “atmosphere” , which may seem more “welcoming” than the classic one. Incidentally, icons are often replaced as well .
In addition, some themes downloadable from the PlayStation Store modify the system sounds of the console, implementing a background music usually related to a particular video game. In short, the possibilities for customization are certainly not lacking and choosing the right theme for your console is not as trivial as it seems.
If you’ve made it this far, it means you pay some attention to the look of the PS4 system, so you probably know what I mean when I talk about “atmosphere”. In this guide, I will help you choose the right one for you.
Before we take action though, let us quickly give you some pointers on how to install these wallpapers . Clearly, you need to have a console connected to the internet and with an active PSN profile : if you don’t know what it is, I recommend that you consult my guide on how to access PlayStation Network .
For the rest, the themes are available on the PlayStation Store , accessible via the shopping bag icon on the PS4 home screen. Here you can take advantage of the Search feature to find the wallpapers you like. If you just can’t find them, you can use the support links I’ve included in the guide or search for them in the Additional Content> Themes section of the PlayStation Store .
To install them, just press the Download button and wait for the system to complete the download (themes are often in the order of a few MB). After that, you will simply have to go to Settings> Themes and apply the wallpaper of your liking.

Best free PS4 themes
The themes that are usually downloaded most often are obviously the free ones . In reality these often have very little to envy to the paid ones and, therefore, I advise you to focus on them initially. Below I give you some advice, based on the themes that convinced me the most.
PlayStation 20th anniversary theme
If you are a gamer with a few years on your shoulders, you will surely remember with nostalgia the first historic PlayStation , sold in Europe since 1995 (in Japan the marketing started in December 1994).
Well, in December 2014 Sony decided to pay tribute to all players by publishing a free theme on the PlayStation Store that celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the PlayStation brand . The theme adopts a slightly “retro” look , but in reality it can also be appreciated by those who have not experienced the golden years of the historic PlayStation firsthand.
It is a theme with sounds , main screen , settings and application icons that refer to the original ones of the 1995 console. Definitely a nice way to remember where it all started.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice – Dynamic party theme
How do you say? Would you like a theme in which the images on the screen are not static but move? Well, in this case I can only recommend Sekiro’s Dynamic Party Theme: Shadows Die Twice .
Free to download from the PlayStation Store , this is one of the best dynamic themes for PS4 available right now. It will be the iconic atmospheres painted by From Software and deriving from the Souls saga, it will be the excellent degree of “immersion” that this wallpaper is able to offer, but every time you turn on the console it leaves you more and more amazed!
The characters of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will liven up your screen: if you are a fan of this title, you can’t help but try the dynamic party theme.
Arise – Hope Theme
Arise: A Simple Story is a title that is positioned far from the “triple A”: it is an indie able to involve and excite, carrying a concrete message and leaving a message in the player’s heart.
Developed by Piccolo Studio SL (among other things, the name makes it clear the indie nature of the project) and released at the end of 2019, Arise: A Simple Story wants us to understand, through an atmosphere that is sometimes dark and sometimes dreamy, that despite the various adversities that can happen in our path on this world, in reality there is always hope .
On the PlayStation Store there are various free themes related to this game: I recommend the one called Hope , or hope. Background, icons and colors of your PlayStation 4 will remind you that in the end you always fall on your feet, despite everything.

Clearly, there are many other free themes worth installing on PS4 besides the ones I’ve just listed. Below I list some free wallpapers that you should consider and that, in my view, can improve the design of the PS4 operating system as it should.
- The Last of Us Part II – Contagion Day Theme : pays homage to what is defined by many users as the “swan song” of the Sony console, including animated effects and atmospheric music.
- Final Fantasy VII Remake – Tifa : If you are a fan of the Final Fantasy saga , you should definitely check out this dynamic theme centered around the figure of Tifa Lockhart, the childhood friend of Cloud Strife.

Among the themes that the most demanding users like the most are those that portray realistic panoramas . For this reason, you might want to consider the Brain Breaker series .
Priced at 99 cents each on PlayStation Store , these wallpapers dynamically renew the look of the console, allowing the user to give breathtaking glimpses of nature . To give you a concrete example, there is a splendid theme dedicated to the Milky Way .
There is also a theme related to the waterfalls , but there are several solutions related to Brain Breaker. In short, you could give a more “natural” look to the PlayStation 4 with these themes, so I advise you to take them into consideration.

Monster Hunter: World is a game that certainly needs no introduction. As you probably already know and as the name suggests, its fans want nothing more than to defeat huge creatures .
The latter have become a sort of “cult” among those who love the genre, so much so that there are those who appreciate this series of themes dedicated to specific “monsters”. If you are a fan of Munster Hunter: World, I suggest you take a look at the dynamic background of the Nergigante , which can be purchased for € 2.99 from the PlayStation Store .
You will surely appreciate seeing this Elder Dragon constantly in the background of your console, perhaps as you prepare to start another “hunting” session.
God of War Anniversary Theme
The adventures of Kratos have kept PlayStation users company for generations. Do you think that the first chapter of God of War was released in 2005 on the PlayStation 2.
To pay homage to this historic series, Sony has well thought of releasing, in 2015, a special theme that accompanies the player in the iconic scenarios that he has “lived” pad in hand. A journey through time that can only please God of War fans .

Even in the case of paid themes, there are a myriad of other solutions in addition to those mentioned above. To give you a little more choice, below you will find other wallpapers that I think are very good.

- The Walking Dead Collection – Theme : For 99 cents, you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere masterfully recreated by Telltale Games . Its graphic adventures are generally well received by the community, and if you’re a fan, this theme might be for you.
- Series Puzzle Showdown 4K : if you are interested in more “classic” themes, for 99 centseach you can take home these high resolution wallpapers , able to significantly improve the look of your PS4.
