“We turned around and looked at the Tomic fans around and I thought ‘Oh, maybe he has our message, and he’s here to rally with Lleyton.’ So Hewitt’s physical therapist approached Bernard’s coach and said, ‘Is he Bernard here to train with Hewitt? ‘Rudy didn’t know anything about it, but he said,’ Look, Bernard is looking for a practice partner and I think he would like to do it, ‘but then Bernard’s agent came in and said,’ No, no he’s here to practice with Lleyton, Lleyton is not good enough. ‘Those were his words:’ Lleyton is not good enough. ‘We were quite flabbergasted. Lleyton just couldn’t believe it; .

Tomic’s team differently cited Hewitt’s style of play as the reason for rejecting the practice offer. Later on, he was asked to practice hitting with former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero , but was rejected. A few weeks later it was revealed that Tomic was forced to turn down the opportunity due to his own infection with swine flu. Subsequently, he denied any approach to Ferrero as an alternative hitting partner, despite the Spanish player’s claim.

In January 2010, an Australian newspaper reported that Tomic’s father had threatened that Bernard would stop playing for Australia and would play for Croatia in the Davis Cup . According to the document, this threat was made during a heated discussion between the director of the Open Australia , Craig Tiley and John Tomic after the defeat of Bernard against Marin Cilic .

At the 2012 Miami Masters , in his match against David Ferrer, he told the chair umpire to warn his father to stop shaking his head because it disconcentrated him.

During the 2013 Madrid Masters , Tomic’s father was arrested for headbutting Bernard’s sparring partner, Thomas Drouet
