History

The origin of the Belgian hare at the beginning of the 18th century at the hands of some nature students, who developed it when they were looking for a beautiful and domestic animal as a pet, is quite exact .

Using the wild animals, they combined the good qualities of each one, one variety for color, another for size, another for shape, to avoid the features they didn’t want it to have. They produced an animal to their liking, which they called leporino. From the moment of its first production, the cleft disappeared from the scene until the middle of the 19th century, when it appeared in England, presumably being brought from Belgium.

Breeding

At first it was raised mainly for its meat, but later people began to admire it for the beauty of its form. In 1882 the English breeders reached an agreement regarding the breed standard. It was the original Belgian hare, which they called the standard.

Shortly after defining the breed standard , he found that many breeders were not satisfied with the result. The discussion continued for seven years, until 1889, when there was a revision. Some points were revised and changed in the standard, which has been maintained to this day.

About the year 1888 , Mr. EM Hughes of Albany, NY, brought the first Belgian hare to America and devoted the rest of his life to introducing it to the United States to the best of his ability. Shortly after the first introduction, an attempt was made to form the American Belgian Hare Association. The club’s efforts were spread over a period of one year. In 1897 there was a second attempt to introduce the Belgian Hare to the United States, thanks to the formation of the National Belgian Hare Club of America.

Main characteristics of the breed

  • The shape of the Belgian Hare is characterized by a good length.
  • Hindquarters are significantly raised
  • The head is thin and elongated
  • The chest is muscular
  • straight tail
  • Elongated and stylized appearance.

The color is intense, dark cherry red. The red “rufus” is the name used to describe the color of the Belgian hare, but few breeders know what this name really means. The color is uniform on the head, ear, chest, legs and body, very intense and well spread on the hindquarters, and on the sides and belly it is usually a deep gold.
