Causes
Under normal conditions, the four chambers of the heart – two atria and two ventricles – contract in an organized way, so that the heart can pump all the blood the body needs without trying too hard. The atria contract very quickly and not in a regular pattern. This causes the ventricles to beat abnormally, leading to an irregular and usually fast pulse.
Causes
- Consumption of Alcohol .
- Congestive heart failure.
- Coronary artery disease .
- High blood pressure
- Gland thyroid overactive.
- Pericarditis .
Symptoms
You may not be aware that your heart is not beating in an abnormal pattern, especially if it has been occurring for some time.
- Exam to look in more detail at the blood vessels supplying the myocardium.
- Exam to study the electrical system of the heart.
Treatment
Sometimes atrial fibrillation may require emergency hospital treatment to return the heart to its normal rhythm. This treatment may involve electric shock or special drugs. Daily medications taken by mouth are used in two different ways:
- To reduce irregular heartbeat: These medications may include beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and digitalis.
- To stop atrial fibrillation from coming back: These medicines may work well for many people, but they can have serious side effects. Many patients can return to atrial fibrillation even while taking those medications.
Forecast
The disorder can usually be controlled with treatment. Many people with atrial fibrillation have a good prognosis. However, atrial fibrillation tends to return and worsen and may recur even with treatment.
Prevention
Follow the doctor’s recommendations regarding the treatment of conditions that cause Atrial Fibrillation.
