Characteristic

The buffalo is a vigorous animal (measuring 260-280 cm and weighing approximately 800-1200 kg), with hairy ears and an enormous pair of horns that end in sharp points. At the base, the horns are very broad and smooth, almost meeting in the center of the forehead; they form a hard, horny helmet, which bullets cannot pierce, and protect the animal’s head from the claws and teeth of others. The hooves are wide and widely separated.

Feeding

Herbivorous.

sexual reproduction

The buffalo has a viviparous reproduction, that is, it is born from the womb. Gestation lasts from 300 to 340 days, at the end of which the female gives birth to a single offspring that reaches full maturity around two years of age.

Lifespan

From 25 to 29 years old.

Behaviour

This monarch of the South African bush is so big and so strong that it fears neither man nor animal. It emerges from a grove. With a furious bellow, he charges at the hunters. He is capable of dealing with two or three lions at the same time. He is very strong, big and, although he is not very fast, he can kill an animal quickly. It is very dangerous because it can kill a man with just a goring. In the wild it lives in groups of 10-20 individuals, and during the mating season the males form harems of females. Most of its time is spent submerged in water or swimming in swamps, feeding on grass.

Habitat

The buffalo is terrestrial, but some have the ability to spend time in the water.

Ecosystem

Wild buffalo like swampy areas and wetlands.

Geographical distribution

Buffalo are found primarily in Africa , North America , and northern Asia . Some water buffalo are found in India .

Characteristics of the physical environment

There are several places where buffalo live, some are cold, others are warm; where he lives is usually a bit dark and he almost always lives high up.

Adaptation mechanisms

The buffalo can adapt and live in a dark place, with water, especially on the ground forming puddles, either of water or mud , since he likes to wallow. A buffalo is not very affected by the cold because it has a thick and warm skin.
