Are Insoles Orthotics?

At the Footlab Mediprax clinic in Puebla , we have different orthopedic items that help correct postures, pathologies, relieve pain, and provide comfort for activities of daily living.

On this occasion we will talk about plantar orthoses, also known as personalized or custom-made orthopedic insoles .

Custom-made orthopedic insoles are said to be plantar orthoses because their main objective is to achieve the correct foot posture and reduce pain during standing and walking.

Why are they custom?

There are various brands and prices of orthopedic insoles that are not custom-made and that you can find in different shopping centers or commercial chains, however this type of insoles do not correct any position in the feet , even their life time is shorter. compared to custom orthopedic insoles , since on average they last 2 to 3 months.

It is very important to know this, because pathologies arise from different factors, such as high performance activities, injuries, or it can develop during growth. The most important thing is to identify this pathology for its correction, because if it is not treated on time, more serious conditions may arise later, such as plantar fasciitis , among others, which not only affect the feet , but also the knees, the spine and the entire musculoskeletal system.

That is why custom orthopedic insoles are made to measure because no two feet are the same, each person has different needs.

The design of custom-made orthopedic insoles begins with a previous evaluation of the gait and the foot called a ” Baropodometric Study “.

The therapeutic objectives of custom-made orthopedic insoles are classified into:

  • Templates for realignment or control of deformities.
  • Pressure relief or distribution templates.
  • Mixed templates, which combine both functions.

What is a baropodometric study?

The term baropodometry is derived from the Greek: BAROS WEIGHT PODOS FOOT and METRON MEASUREMENT , together they are interpreted as the ” measurement of foot pressures “.

The University of Montpellier, founded in 1289, is one of the oldest in France and in the world, it has the honor because within its facilities baropodometry was born and developed by research carried out by Professor Rabishong, in the year of 1978.

Later Piero Galazzo in 1986, is in charge of describing and investigating in depth the computerized system for the study of pressures and plantar loads of the foot , both in static and dynamic position.

The results obtained from this test allow to evaluate with maximum precision, the general behavior of the tonic postural system of the person who underwent the test.

In order to interpret the results generated from the baropodometric study in  our foot evaluation clinic, our specialists are in charge of explaining the postural and footprint changes, in this way it is possible for all our patients to understand the reason for applying the modifications to include in the design of custom orthopedic insoles .
